Seems like they have pistols and shotguns....

Even Saddam allowed limited gun ownership...

Given the Middle East's history with the suppression of uprisings (The 'kill them all' approach is usually favored), I doubt the 'regime' is worried about pistols and hunting rifles/shotguns....

Just yesterday I saw a story about Egyptians taking up arms. I'll see if I can find it again.

ETA: The piece I saw showed a guy in street clothes holding an AK. Judging by the accuracy of the MSM it was probably a stock photo from the Gaza Strip. I cannot find it now. About all I could find is articles about people arming themselves with sticks. I also found this:

"Watch groups armed themselves with a makeshift arsenal of shovels, baseball bats, whips, and the occasional shotgun. Young men organized themselves into shifts, and locals brought tea and other snacks.

"We have these firebombs, just in case," said Amm Saleh, the doorman of a building in Zamalek. "Some of these thugs are armed with knives and guns, so we have to be able to defend ourselves," he added, showing off a line of kerosene-filled bottles with paper wicks ready for action."

Edit again: I just found this. It looks like they have very limited ownership.

"If I had a visa to anywhere, I'd join them. But that's not going to happen," said Mohammed Khaled, a 28-year-old Egyptian doctor. "Right now, I'd settle for a gun, but I can't even find one of those."

A friend of mine's husband is Egyptian, much family in Egypt.  They say it is far worse than being reported, ZERO resources or "protection".  They are literally guarding their apartment with knives.

I heard that there were bands of teenagers armed with guns roaming the streets.  Who knows if it was true or accurate, or if the guns were legal if it was true.

You see photos of everyone carrying a gun in Israel too, but try to go out and buy one!

Gun ownership is very hard to get in Egypt

The importation of guns was banned and domestic made guns are expensive and its very hard to get a gun license apparently

I guess if you are  a livestock herder you can get a permit for a shotgun but thats about it.

Regular Egyptians are SOL in owning a gun
