Lets start out by me saying that I'm in no way a professional guitar player or music critic. I'm just interested to hear what bothers other people and see if I hear it as well.

For me it's Eight Miles High by The Byrds. The solo makes me want to freak out. I like the rest of the song though.

Skip to 3:21 so you don't have to listen to Journey's worst song, and just listen to Journey's worst guitar solo.

I'm not sure that's what the OP is asking for.  That is a very good, very EVH solo.

That solo is likely one of the most profitable things EVH has ever done.

And he did it in one day, from his house.  In less than an hour.

They came over, played him the demo, he laid down a thirty second track, they made a few adjustments, he did another 30-second take, and that was it.  Here's several million dollars.

You WISH you had a job like that.

To be fair... Isn't that pretty much his job - to play Frehley's old character, playing his guitar parts? Heaven forbid he do anything to take the spotlight away from Paul or Gene.

If we're discussing studio recordings - Neil Young's "Rockin in the Free World" is glaringly, jarringly awful. As in so bad - Gibson should have PAID him to quit using their product. So bad that Les Paul should've bitch slapped him using his good arm.

As for stuff I've witnessed live - CC Deville of Poison was about the laziest, most boring guitarist I've ever seen in a rock act.

It might not be the best solo ever, it's not. It might be the worst of Journey's solos, not sure about that. It's definitely not a bad solo on the scale of bad solos. It's definitely has a very hackneyed and formulaic sound to it, but so did most ballad solos from that era. Looking for a great solo in a ballad is like looking for the best shotgun for HD, it's a retarded undertaking.

All of EVH's solos are recycled EVH. The part you fail to mention is that EVH is a guitar god for that exact reason. Deservedly so.

I remember clearly an interview that CC did in the time between Open Up and Say Ahhh and Flesh and Blood. How he had been growing and evolving as a guitar player, and that he had discovered that guitar isn't all about how many notes you play in the shortest amount of time, and to play more meaningful solos without just flying through pentatonic scales.

Then Flesh and Blood came out, and he was all "beedeloo-beedeloo-beedeloo-beedeloo-beedeloo" all over again.

Saw them with Warrant in '89 - his big solo was pretty much exactly that - for like FIVE FUCKING MINUTES. It was like one lick, played on a loop, while he swaggered around thinking he was Kieth Richards cool. He bookended it with some scale runs, IIRC. The drummer, OTOT put on an entertaining solo.
