North Korea is still the shining example of a Maoist state.
Mao was the guy who thought Lenin and Stalin weren't quite commie enough. The Soviets had a 5-year plan for taking over their private industries... Mao simply lined up all the private business owners and land owners in China, and killed them or enslaved them, over a period of just a few months. China evolved. (Mao's probably rolling over in his grave right now). North Korea didn't. They're still that bass-ackwards country that forces 99% of its citizens to eat grass citizens and bow before the great Supreme Leader. Why the fuck anybody can look at that shit and think Maoism or communism is a good idea is beyond me. |

I am always suspicious of the eating grass thing, as it sounds like propaganda to me. You wouldn't live long doing that.
Lots of documentaries on the workers in shipyards and wood cutting camps, they are treated very poorly, and those are the ones they trust to work outside of North Korea. Lots of cameras go places and film things in North Korea that they don't want filmed. Crazy place. |

I saw some documentary on defectors years ago and one thing that stuck with me was a defector that was let down by the experience. She was bummed when she learned she would have to get a job in SK, learn a skill or just be an assembly line worker, pay bills, and all that. She liked the freedom and was amazed by things like grocery stores, but somehow thought life in SK was going to be hassle-free or something.

Nork families were given locally produced TVs pre-tuned for only their channels for the purpose of spreading propaganda,it being mandatory to watch addresses and so forth...even if there might not be electricty to do so. Watching an unlicensed TV capable of viewing un-jammed ROK broadcasts or DVDs is tantamount to undermining the state. |

If anyone would like further reading, there is a book called A Thousand Miles to Freedom written by Eunsun Kim, a DPRK defector who details her journey from North to South Korea. It is also available in audiobook on audible. The man and woman in the video, as horrible as it sounds, don't do it justice.
