What do you think that the United States will look like 100 years from now? That may be too much of a stretch, so how about 50 years from now? I was privileged to have been born 50 years ago. To put things in perspective, on the night I was born, the I Love Lucy show was the Number One television show in the nation. That very night was the first airing of the 'Vitameatavegimin' episode, I think you may remember that one! Lucy was pregnant at the time with 'Little Ricky', but there could be no reference made whatsoever to her pregnancy on the show! No mention of the word 'pregnant', no mention of her being 'in the family way', 'with child', 'expecting', or any term that would directly relate to her condition! Nothing. That's just how things were in 1952 and throughout most of the 50s, and 60s. Now, if you have the right cable subscription, you can get a pretty good idea of just how Lucy may have become pregnant back then! But, anyway, I digress. I do, however, want to remind you a bit of just how things have progressed in just 50 short years. 50 years ago, the NFA was a bookkeeping aspect of the Department of the Treasury, used to collect a simple tax. If your granddad was caught with an unregistered full-auto 'bring back' from his service in WWII, he was simply asked to pay the $200.00 tax, or give up the weapon. Unless he was wanted on other charges, or for other crimes (such as Mr. Miller in the US v. Miller case) there was little possibility that he would be charged with a crime! You could order any legal weapon you desired through the US mails! The Postman would deliver letters twice a day! Once in the morning, and again that afternoon! He would always ring the doorbell twice when doing so, to let you know 'You Have Mail.' Courthouses in Texas were open on Saturdays, to permit farmers and ranchers to come get their legal work attended to, at their convenience. There were, of course, serious problems. If you were, say, black or female, anywhere in the country, there were serious legal and social drawbacks to your complete enjoyment of American citizenship. 1952 was the first year in the United States in which no lynchings were reported from any state! In 1896, lynchings (mostly of blacks)occurred approximately once every 36 hours! But all in all, such was on the way out by the 1950s. As were Jim Crow laws and laws that disabled adult women in some respect. Now, what are your expectations of the future. Will the United States continue over the next 50 years to remain basically the same as it is presently? With the same amount of personal freedom? Same basic morals? Will it possibly even be better, with more personal freedoms, and a higher standard of morals? Or will it sink into some sort of real world version of Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner'? I'll make a poll! [:D] BTW, for those Christians out there, please, for the sake of gauging everyone's personal view of the next 50 years, just assume that we are not in some kind of 'countdown to Armageddon', and that the Lord delays His return until sometime after the next 50 years. Otherwise, the poll will look incredibly dark and pessimistic! Eric The(GloomAndDispair,Inc.)Hun[>]:)]

Now, what are your expectations of the future.
View Quote
Continued decline overall in all areas of measurement. There may be some slight improvement in some areas, but the general direction will be downward. To use your TV show example, we can now watch a routine daily broadcast of people getting divorces, and talk shows where DNA screens are performed on the guests to determine "who's the daddy?". This sort of thing passes for "entertainment" instead a point for national shame. Expect "the right cable subscription" to no longer be required for porn. It will become common on all TV channels at any time. Watch for full nudity on broadcast television to be the first step in this direction. Meanwhile marriage is becoming more and more obsolete as women can become "in the family way" by visiting a clinic and selecting the daddy from a catalog! She need never even meet the man in person! Meanwhile serious consideration is given to allowing gay "couples" to adopt children! Expect greater and greater pressure to move farther away from the traditional family unit. Look for severe problems to develop in children as a result. Expect euthanasia to gain greater and greater acceptance. As resources become scarer, pressure will be applied on the elderly to "get out of the way". Sick individuals will be strongly encouraged to "take the easy way out" and reduce their suffering. Doctor assisted suicide(it won't be called that...)will become commonplace. Abortion will be extended to already born children as the mother is given the "choice" of changing her mind for a period, maybe for as long as the first year for the child!
Will the United States continue over the next 50 years to remain basically the same as it is presently? With the same amount of personal freedom?
View Quote
After one or more terrorist incidents in the CONUS, expect greater intrusions in personal liberty. These intrusions will be passed off on the population as necessary to maintain "security". Ever increasing political correctness will prohibit speaking out against groups or races that will be largely responsible for these terrorist actions. This aspect has already begun to present itself now. Following generations will accept this as normal and necessary. The ever increasing "security" will be also be accepted. Look for roadblock "checkpoints" to be in place and accepted as normal. GPS tracking of individual citizens will become a common and accepted practice as small children continue to disappear to satisfy the sexual preversions of various individuals.http://www.msnbc.com/news/791811.asp?pne=msn Of course as children grow into adults, these tracking implants will remain in place and be used to maintain greater control on personal activities.
Will it possibly even be better, with more personal freedoms, and a higher standard of morals?
View Quote
Absolutely not. In all areas you describe, decline will be the overall direction. One need only look at the change in public perception of homosexuals. Formerly they were considered dangerous deviates to be shunned at all cost. Now anyone holding this view is to be shunned at all cost. Look for child molesters to be next on the road to general acceptance. Expect STD's to run rampant through the general population. Expect strains of various virus' to become more and more resistant to antibiotics as a result.
Or will it sink into some sort of real world version of Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner'?

Absolutely. Expect food shortages to kick in as drought becomes more and more common. As food becomes more expensive, only the elite will have enough money to afford it. Expect riots and civil wars of resource allocation as time passes. As this situation becomes more and more desperate, expect stronger restrictions against private firearms ownership to become the norm. Expect greater UN control of resources. Since the "haves" will not tolerate having their resources given to the "have nots", expect war and strife to increase even more as a result. Sorry, but that is way I see it. Edited to add for the dumbass brigade... NO, I am not sitting around eagerly waiting for any of the above to take place!

Our freedoms and morals aren't the same as they were 50 years ago, nor the 50 before that. The only thing that is constant is change. Our individual freedoms will continue to erode, our morals will continue to change. Some will be worse, hopefully some better. Our attitudes towards "free sexuality" I expect will be changed pretty dramatically due to STDs, but I don't think you're ever going to see Americans as a whole practicing Puritan sexual mores. Blade Runner? Yes, I suppose Phillip Dick may have been prophetic. Read some of William Gibson's early stuff, like Burning Chrome and Count Zero for an updated picture of what the near-future might look like. I certainly don't forsee a Logan's Run future, though perhaps Soylent Green may not be so far off the mark. Trekkers not withstanding, I don't see us suddenly becoming a single united worldwide happy planet. I fully expect there to be some attempt in the next 100 years, and possibly in the next 50 to do so, with disastrous results.

I predict civil/race war following economic collapse, a series of stupid politicians getting us into more and more pointless foreign entaglements. The further decay of our once decent republic into a democracy and from there into a full blown socialist/facist police state, total degeneration of morals that would make 1936 Berlin look like a Carmelite sanctuary in comparisonm, and finally a dissolution of the US.
Will it possibly even be better, with more personal freedoms, and a higher standard of morals?

When you say the United States, are you referring to the land currently labeled on maps as such or to the remnants of this country? We are a country divided against itself. We're in that stage before a totalitarian government is build and collapses upon itself. In 50 years, we'll be slowly rebuilding a society.

Illegal immigration will continue to flood the country with TB infested criminals. Creating a huge public health crises and leading to the Blakanization of the US. Methamphetamine will continue to spread throughout the west and south west. Clean, pure and expesive Hawaiin Ice repleced by dirty cheap "speed" made in back yard and motel labs. Privaledged white kids as young as 14 will get hooked young, and use their entire short life until they die at around 30. The girls, as young as 12, will routinly perform sex acts previously reserved for porn stars to support their drug habit. The resulting latch-key kids will be raised by MTV while mom dances at the strip club to pay the rent. Entire generations of white kids lost. In the Midwest and Northeast the same situation plays out with Crack in the Black and Poor white communities. I dont think we have 100 years left. I'm witnessing the first paragraphs of this post 42 hours a week, it gets worse every year.

My expectations for My future are Scary but Good. My Expectations for America's future, well I don't know, we are at a turning point, We will see which way 'the people' are wanting to go at the next election. We can save her or loose her in 2004/6. But I would have to agree that the general trend is not good, but there are a few specific brightspots. This is not one of them. I was driving to go enroll yesterday, and I took a route that took me through the slums to get to the school. Not on purpose just that I don't know my way around that part of town very well. It was a slum, a lot of poverty. And low and behold I pass by Mosque, Allahu Ackbar it says on the board. Here is the problem. Everyone needs a religion of somesort. Liberals (at least the leadership part) are secular humanists, they don't believe in God. But they champion the so called, Underprivileged, and they write their laws to breed poverty, but the poor need God too. But the liberals are all the time putting down Christianity and Judaism and have members that champion Islam. This leaves I think there poorest constituents choosing Islam. Islam is at war with America, Israel and Christianity. You get the picture. Ben

Sorry Eric, but the USA as we know it will not exist in 50 years. I doubt it will last another 20. third World immigration will change the demographics to the point tha the Southwest will be a province of Mexico, the northeast will be part of some UN-led 'world government,' and the remainder of the landmass will be Balkanized into several competing mini-nations. Immorlaity will increase to the poin that half of the nation will be dying of STDs and drug-related health complications. I sincerely hope that I am wrong, but history and the Law of Entropy support my views. Societies disintegrate, and rebuild slowly. I think we are in a period of disintegration. The possibility that part of the USA will remain a bastion of freedom in a world of fascism cannot be ignored. I hold but little hope for this, but hope nonetheless.

I donn't think that the US as we know it will still be around in 50 years. In fact, for all practical purposes, I think that the US will cease to be within 25 years, maybe still within my lifetime. I don't see and violent revolutions on the horizon but I do see quite a few trends that are working towards the elimination of Nation/States as rapidly as possible. First, Business is no longer National is origin. It is truly International. All of the things that create as distinguish a Nation/State are an obstical to efficient business. Things like borders, customs and duties, local laws, local or regional environmental restrictions, labor laws, National Monies (dollar, pound, yen, euro...) and domestic political considerations simply add to the cost of doing business. Since there is no National Loyalty in Multi-National Corporations, they would like to see all of these eliminated. Population Growth. Several of the worlds major Nations are actively supporting exportation of their growing populations. This is particularly true of Mexico and China. Both China and our friend Fox from Mexico has said that they they have a right to send their people into the US either legally or illegally. From the latest figures that I have been able to find, about 2,000,000 illegal aliens enter the US every year. About 60% are from Asia (mostly China), 35% from Mexico and Central America and the balance from the rest of the world. The Hispanics are primarily located in a band stretching from Texas to southern California. The Asians from Southern California up through Alaska and another group along the Pacific Coast of South America. unlike previous inflows of immigrants, these people do not necessarily consider themselves as Proto-Americans but as Displaced Asians or Hispanics. there primary allegence and loyalties are still with China and Mexico. The East-Coast and across to Chicago is getting an influx of classic immigrants, but they are from just about every point of the globe. The East Coast is also becoming an area where competition for jobs and power between the US Afican-Americans and the new immigrants. The costs involved over the next 25 years dealing with and midigating the effects of global warming will be the biggest expense this nation has ever faced. With such a high percentage of our Natiional wealth directed towards one single project, there will be little money, time, energy or desire to deal with anything else. Certainly, there will not be the will to start, fight or win another War of Succession. Finally, the power struggles of the rest of the world, the fight between rich and poor, fundamentalist and everyone else, between North and South, will continue. And we can't hope that the next crop of terrorists will pick a target like the WTC. Next time, theny just might pick a target that really is significant and that would actually hurt the US. So what will the US look like 50 years from now? I think it will be a small area in the middle of the country, most likely broken into two warring areas both claiming the title of US. There will be a South Western area consisting of Middle and Northern TX, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and parts of Ohio and Illinois, Iowa and Indiana. There will be a Northwest Mountain area with Idaho, Utah, Colorado, North and South Dakota, Montana, And parts of Washinton and Oregon. The Nation(??) of Hispania will sweep across the lower part of the US from lower Mississippi to around LA and will include Arizona and New Mexico. Pacifica(???) will extend from Hispania up the west coast and include Alaska and Hawaii as well as most of the Pacific Coast of South America.

50-100 years from now I see: Greater cultural, racial, and social diversity. People will have come to understand others better and be more accepting of differences. Minority groups will learn to not isolate themselves and will mingle with those of us who wish to share/discuss their experiences, both good and bad, and work towards better relationships. There won't be much financial diversification, but people will be paid more towards what they are worth. Hard workers and great thinkers will be rewarded accordingly. There will be more hard workers and thinkers, because of less hand-outs. This is what I can offer you. Vote for me in 2004! ;)

Short term...our adventure in the Balkans will come back to haunt us, our war in the middle east will at first go okay, but that will blow up on us. Those two happenings will mean gas at $5-7, maybe $10, per gallon, killing any recovery and pushing unemployment to 20%. We will get involeved in Africa, and will lose 10s of thousands of troops, but no one will care, because Islam will either use a nuke or bio attack and kill one to ten million. We will respond by increasing our affirmative action programs for arabs. We will lose lower callie, 'new' mexico, az (azteca), and much of texas either directly to mexico or as some sort of associated nation. Japan will annex Hawaii and Guam and the remainder of our far east possessions under a UN mandate to fix our imperial wrongs. Spanish will become more the language of the common man all over the country, and english will become more of an upper class tounge. The dream of a house in a subdivision and two cars will become just that, a dream, as taxes will increase to an average burden of 80% and ecofreaks and minority lovers outlaw new communities through planning laws and mandatory school assignment laws. We will finish the last step after medicare/medicaid/hipaa and will go to a VA style health system for all americans, with the lastest and greatest morning after pills and AIDS drugs availible with no waiting; and no treatment at all for anyone not in a pressure group (minorities and the old will have no waiting top of the line care, everyone else will die as the government builds huge state of the art nursing centers to keep the AARP voters alive) Legal wise, our laws will continue to grow until anyone is a felon at any given time. Enforcement will continue to fall, with no one arrested for simple robbery or larceny unless they offend one of the elite while doing so. Business crimes will become more common, with failure to abide by AA programs and environmental offense resulting in prison time for the company leadership. Speech related crimes will continue to grow, until the public use of a term like 'indian' or 'negro' and any suggestion that any group tends to do something better, or likes to do some things, will result in prison. The civil system will get more complex, with effective acces to the courts cut off for the common man (unless suing for a hate or speech crime) by means of mandatory arbitration clauses in every interaction in life, from shopping in a supermarket to viewing a movie to entering a public park. The fees to file an arbitration will be set somewhere around the level of one year's pay for a laborer, thus preventing them from suing. The government will continue to use the civil courts to express their will on the people without having to go through the process of passing laws and having debate on their policies.

I do not forsee a bleak, dystopian future. While I think that technology will make some radical changes in society and the way we interact, people will remain fundamentally the same. The world standard of living, in general will continue to rise. Lifespans, and quality of life for the elederly will rise ridiculously. Energy will get cheap, and the middle east will only be important if you are into visiting religous shrines or smoking craters (take your pick). The civil liberties we argue over today will seem relatively unimportant, as we argue over new rights and new facets to existing ones. Self-defense will be a universally recognized right, but only because less-lethal technology will be mature. Politicians will continue to be corrupt, and will be increasingly viewed as marketable "products" created by staffs of pollsters and hacks and vetted by computers and focus groups (wait a minute, hasn't this happened already?) Read Sterling, Stephenson and Halperin for some ideas (not definitive visions). No one can really say what things will be like. Someone born at the close of the 19th century who lived into the 90s went from coal-fired trains, telegraphs and horses to transcontinental airlines, streaming real-time porn and routine space flight. No one really knows what can happen. We may all get wiped out by a solar flare (emerging science; scary stuff) or an asteroid.

What I hope to see and what will be are two different things........ In the next 50 years, I know: .... there will be wars. .... there will be political scandals. .... there will be people who do not care. .... there will be taxes. .... there will be revolutions. .... there will be war. .... there will be disease. .... there will be discoveries. .... there will be hope.

How ‘bout this… The United States is the victim of random terror attacks. All across the country, where the attacks occur, people who are scared, and never thought about purchasing a firearm, go to their local gun shops and do so. After 9-11 some friends of mine had me go to the local shops to aid them in purchasing a “home defense” weapon. After a few years of this, there are more and more gun owners in the US. When the politicians try to pass the Draconian laws that we are all concerned about, “the people” tell them to F*CK OFF. If enough people are “scared” into having to defend themselves, they may see that THEY, themselves are the best first line of defense of their families. I can dream, can’t I.

Gloom dispair and agony on me. Deep dark depression, excessive misery. If it weren't for bad luck, we'd have no luck at all. Gloom dispair and agony on me. From HEE-HAW Thats what the posts are saying. I wish it would not be that way, but, I think life will become as bad, or worse, as expressed in the posts. Move out of the big cities. Big cities are going to evolve into ever greater and greater cesspools. Just because every body is out to get me, does not mean I am a paranoiac. Bill

Things will be much worse AND much better than you could possibly imagine.

I thought according to Nostradamus, the world was gonna' end in 2013, which coincidently is the year I was planning to retire. It figures. If it doesn't end in 2013, then expect as yet undreamed of technological advances in every aspect of daily life. Just a guess. If any of the doom and gloom predictions come to pass, I expect the possiblity exists that I may go down in a blaze of glory. (LOL!) Or more likely a dull thud. Edited to add that unless there are some sreious changes around here I WILL MOVE OUT OF CALIFORNIA BY THEN!!! (I hope)

I'll take it that last prediction was wishful thinking. [:D]

Ben

Something dawned on me. If this model of what I saw yesterday is correct. Then all we have to do is sitback and America IN ALL HER GLORY WILL BE DELIVERED TO US or maybe our Children. The Meek shall inherit the Earth. Well when it comes to this situation the Meek Shall Inherit America.. And America will be delivered out of this morass.

No, the meek will be very DEAD!

Cities are expected to become hellish.... The opposite will happen. Cities will become super-expensive, the poor will be pushed out. The rural countryside will be covered with housing communities. I just want my flying car, that's all.

Orwell was an optimist!! 1984 was 25 years off the date mark but pretty accurate in other ways. ID cards will come first then be replaced by implants. They will be required to purchase everything, at the various randomn checkpoints and entry to any building, maybe even your own home. The uneducated, dictator raised hordes will increase their flood into America. Spanish will become the national language. English will be forbidden in public. Votes will be tabulated electronically making our current questionable elections look like exercises in perfection. The vote will be as honest as Bill Clinton. Medical science will make great strides, one of the few bright spots. Due to the narrow minded pro-life idiots, most of the greatest advances will be made in other countries. It won't really matter though. The price of medical care for the middle class (if there IS a midle class anymore!!) will be out of reach. Only the wealthy and the welfare class will be able to afford it. Much as it is now but far worse. Some of those great advances will prove to be a Pandoras Box. Genetic manipulation, abuse by corporations such as insurance, abuse by government will grow to astronomical proportions. Your genetic privacy will be lost completely as it will be in the government computers and encoded on your ID chip. Gun ownership along with all other rights listed in the constitution will be only memories. While lip service is paid to the document and compliant laws, it will be no more effective than the USSR's was. The destruction will occur slowly with hardly a whimper from the public. The Islamic wars will bring great suffering to the US. Millions will die in ensuing NBC attacks until we agree to allow Israel to be absorbed into the state of Palestine. Of course, most Jews will be tried and judged guilty, to be hacked up in public entertainment areas. Islam will become the only legal US religion, putting an end to most of the attacks. The US will fully comply with all mandates of the UN as dictated by the Third World. Those dictates will eliminate any effective application of our constitution and do away with our sovernety. I wonder if congress will be retained as a rubber stamp or if they will just desolve it. The day to day life of people will be in full compliance with the PC police. No private transportation will be allowed. Workers must live within walking or mass transit distance of their jobs. Rural areas will be farmed by those unlucky enough to have violated laws concerning "hate speech", "anti diversity acts", speaking English in public, whatever minor religious crimes the moslems cook up like allowing your women to retain certain pleasurable parts of their anatomy, or hoarding cash. More serious crimes such as tampering with your ID implant will result in far more serious punishment. Hunger, shortages and disease will run wild in rural areas as those will be considered unworthy of attention. All people of any value will live in large cities. Each city will have a "lower class" area where conditions similar to rural areas will be maintained. Some of those will just be walled off with little in the way of law within nor anything much in the way of goods or services. Some of the above is a bit far out but some of it will certainly come to pass. America as we know it will cease to exist. Life for the rich will be great but suck for everybody else. One day the rich will wakeup and find that it has gotten so bad that much of their life will suck as well. I will be pleased to not live to see much of this, only the beginnings we have now.

In 50 years, after an exhaustive 25 years of research gathering and analyzing data at the cost of 10's of billions of taxpayer dollars... scientist will determine that losing weight is best done by eating less and exercising more. As far as the everything else,... in the words of 'Steven' [that crazy Irishman in Braveheart], 'God tells me he can get me out of this mess, but he's pretty sure... you're fvcked' [:D]

I believe there will be a civil war again in this Country if morals and freedoms keep going down hill, and if that doesn't start a war here, then the UN will be a cause for arms. I don't beleive God almighty will bless this Country as HE has in the past without serious change occurring like a revival of some sort or an awakening to occur, if that happened (a revival) then we will probably be OK, but if we decline then judjment is immenent. Government is getting stronger, and stronger, and more corrupt every day. and if that continues we are screwed. 911 woke some of us up but most have forgotten and it is bussiness as usual. I like what Billy Grahams son was saying on Fox news channel the other day, that Muslims are a significant threat to our way of life and the coran really does encourage war against Christians and Jews. Also California will fall of into the ocean and when that happens 1/3rd of are problems will be solved.
