came across this years ago at a flea market and it has lived as a paper weight since then. Any one know exactly what this is and what fired it? I'm assuming it is not an explosive round? The copper band says:
"ZEL-2-17    55   30MM   T328" and the tip is aluminum I think.

Wondering what it might be worth also?
Thanks for any info!

T328 is an inert projectile/ball round for the older 30mm aerial platforms (revolving barrel), by older it's 50s/60s

Thanks everyone! So anyone know what kind of metal/steel the body is made of? What was this supposed to be intended to shoot at?

It is a projectile for the experimental 30x126B round...it is strictly a TP (training/practice) projectile, completely inert and harmless.

There were tons of these surplused years ago, very common, but almost impossible to find the proper case for it.

It was for the experimental T128 revolving cannon....

After researching I have found that some of these say different things on the copper band like "HVM - 15-4856 30MM T328" and "HVM-15-5156 30MM T328 along with mine that says ZEL-2-17 55 30MM T328". Does anyone know what these different numbers mean or stand for?

Manufacturing variation, plus paint will come off the aluminum a lot easier than the steel....

ETA In your projectiles case, I am guessing someone stripped the paint, or it was unfinished....

Paint doesn't stick on radioactive bullets

Well it is from the 50's-60's era so hopefully it is not at a dangerous level still! LOL

All joking aside is there any chance this thing is radioactive? I've been fondling it for 15 years and my 6 year old likes to play with it.

I got one at a gun show.  It fits my 30mm A-10 shell, and I use it to top it off on my shelf.

The T239 cartridge was an experimental predecessor to the 20x113 round use on the apache today. It was used on the T182 revolver cannon.

Excellent link on 30mm cartridge collecting:
http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/30mm%20cannon.htm

The whole round in the picture below is about 30 bucks. The projectile by itself is pretty common. MattW out of Alaska shoots them out of his 30x173 homemade cannon.

Anyone know the type of steel these projectiles are made of? Are they heat treated so they have a certain hardness? Really hard body to punch through armor?

I don't know the specifics of your particular shell but my company used to make equipment to inspect 20mm shells.  It's been years since I've looked at the print but as I recall they're made out of a standard high carbon steel that is induction hardened.  I believe they are hardened for two reasons. First to survive the firing stress and second to fragment more effectively.

TP projectiles are just made of plain old mild steel, typically...no need to spend time or money on hardened projectiles. Actual combat ammo is different but Target Practice rounds don't have to be fancy...

In fact most 25mm TP APDS rounds for the Bradley are made of steel...if you compare the core of the steel TP's to a Tungsten Carbide combat core, the steel is longer to make it the same weight as the tungsten, since the tungsten is denser than steel. But for practice the steel projectiles are cheaper and easier to make....
