I was all iron sights all the time until I just happened to get to the range at a time of day when it's not dark enough for a flashlight, and not light enough to be without one. If not for a red dot, I would have had to wait for full sunrise to see the target. Aluminum hadndguards are very tacticool, they also will suck the heat right out of your hand on a cool night to the point of being almost unusable. They'll also start burning your hand after just a few mag dumps. Have gloves. No matter what. Always have some form of glove. Even if it's warm. I went the other route: I always planned on "never" having gloves with me when I need them. Instead, I stick to the military polymer handguards with heat shields and they keep the heat off your hands just fine. I mount my flashlight to the bayonet lug using one of those K-Z bayonet lug rails. The heat won't transfer to the light within one magazine. So as long as you let the weapon cool between mags the heat won't damage your flashlight. In an HD situation where you may have to fire more than that, well, buy a new damn flashlight. |

A 4D Tactical helmet liner is totally worth it. When it's cold said pads are hard and do not immediately mold to you head.
When shooting in the cold at night the hot gas from shooting will at times obscure your nods. |

Every ounce you carry will add up and seem to multiply itself the farther you go. That pretty much kicks that “two is one and one is none,” trope right in the ass. Enough days of walking and the temptation to leave even pretty necessary stuff behind rises.
Also, anything that sticks out will catch on something, and shit breaks at the worst time. |

That the latch on AR15 extended charging handles seems to get caught on damned near everything. Unless it is a rifle used primarily for matches or range play, the GI charging handle seems to be my favorite.

Dimpled barrels are mandatory when building a rifle. If you don't have a dimpling jig, get one.
KNS pins are the FCG insurance you never knew you needed until you watch your wife's SHTF rifle back out both pins while sighting in. Blue Loctite if it needs to occasionally come off. Rocksett if it needs to stay put. When you wrap your head around what a military qualified M4/M16 goes through in its life, you realize a parkered C158 bolt and chrome line BCG is SHTF reliable. When you find an affordable source for Microbest C158 chrome lined BCG, you buy 10 of them. |

Mirage and trace are visible through clip on night vision with IR illumination. Bullet bases also reflect the IR, so you can watch the bullet arc into the target, but you have to crank your laser up pretty high.
Thermal crossover is a very confusing time. Big rocks retain a lot of heat for a long time. Trying to run one NV tube and one thermal tube doesn't work at all; you either perceive one image or the other, they don't overlay like you might expect. Rifle suppressors get hot FAST. From a distance, suppressed supersonic sounds like gunfire without the edge or concussion; suppressed subsonic sounds like a hammer. Desert boots do not like to be wet - the suede around the ball of the foot cracks very quickly in a wet environment. Single point slings generally suck, but are kind of okay with a light, compact subgun. |

I learned I had to spend some money a few times to find holsters that actually worked for my daily carry setups. I have boxes of holsters that were all awesome til I actually tried them out from edc to range drills. I would be a wealthy man if I could have avoided some of the holsters I bought over the years.

I have learned lots of lessons but one in particular was that HSGI tacos absolutely suck. Your mags will end up all over creation if you patrol through a wooded area or crawl on the ground.
