Why would you not have a motorcycle helmet and leathers on if you are going to travel at that speed?

No sympathy here.

Problem with stunts like that are the fact that you WILL eventually have a wreck. When you do wreck it is going to be bad.

Looks like he did have a helmet, but it got ripped off his head.

+1 obviously not taking the risks serious.

Nothing good ever happens after the front wheel comes off.
Link Posted: 3/11/2006 6:00:55 PM EDT
Seen that on TV before, the guy lived.

+1. That's a Darwin-esque thing to do.

If he'd been wearing real gear, motorcyle helmet and racing leathers, he would've been fine.

Bicycle gear doesn't work at those speeds, but guys go down all the time going way faster on motorcycles and walk away if they don't hit any immovable objects.

Looked like the frame failed from the stress....

Did I see the GPS right? 143 MPH??

Somehow makes it more interesting

he needs to get together with the guy who put a rocket on a bicycle.

I like the part where one helper is catching Mr. Velocity's teeth as he spits them out.

Did you see the strange curves in his right arm, when they get to him, when he still has his suit on?

I'd be interested to know what make/model bike/frame that was.

I was just shopping for a new bike.. I've decided on a 2006 Cannondale Prophet 1000. just have to push myself harder to spend that kind of money

This guy doesn't wreck but he'd be pretty damned screwed if he did.

I can only hope that some point in my life, I'll have nothing better to do than build a rocket powered bicycle.
Link Posted: 3/12/2006 12:32:00 PM EDT
Looks like the head-tube snapped and the forks and wheel flew off. I've seen crashes similar...Just not at that speed! hock.gif

I'm willing to bet that the frame was made out of aluminum. 4130 chromoly would've probobly held up better and not snapped.

Alot of MTB guys don't want the extra weight of 4130 tubing, so they go with aluminum. It can be a weight vs. strength issue bascially. I know a few who NEEDED a more burly set-up...so they made their own out of 4130.

He didnt look like he had a helmet on!
Link Posted: 3/12/2006 8:15:16 PM EDT
I think he was wearing a helmet, but it was one of those streamlined bicylce helmets I don't think designed for 100mph speeds. I would want a full face motorcycle helmet.

Wow. That is almost as dangerous as a fat person trying to run down a flight of stairs (in between posts).

That was no cyclist, that was a zombie!
Link Posted: 3/13/2006 4:40:20 AM EDT
I will second the statements that that guy needed racing leathers (a sturdy textile suit at the minimum) , armored boots, and a full-faced helmet.

I give him credit for the stunt, but he wasn't wearing proper safety gear. if he had been, he would have been whooping and laughing instead of staggering around dazed with blood on his face.
