Yes, friends! I am once again being called upon to uproot my life for the sake of the company!

I'm off to Laredo after all!

I can't complain. They asked, I agreed. Pay raise, and the place is 15% cheaper to live in than Raleigh, so for two years I'll endure.

Sigh. Time to pack up the office again....

Just call me the Roaming Gnome.

Pay raise, and it's cheaper to live there. Sounds excellent, just from a monetary standpoint.

If you have a wife and kids, however...

You still got us
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 1:00:41 PM EDT
Shit, get paid MORE to move to Texas? You must hate your life.

There's a part of me that wishes my company would do that!

Though with my luck they'd tell me I had to move to some awful bunghole state...

Just remember who you're doing it for.

THE MAN!!!

Holy Smoke!

God moves you to Texas. and you gripe?

What's it take to make some people happy?

They live in Miami, so this move changes little.

Visitation is very flexible, considering the distance.

It's not ideal, but it works, and will work out fine in the long run. The Lord and I have an agreement.

Bring your AR! Fox 7 news at 9 tonight here in Austin:

Border Insecurity: Gang Violence spills across the border into Laredo. Locals and tourists are running scared, and the fear is spreading into Texas (proof that Laredo is not really Texas).

But really, I've been hearing a lot of stuff from friends down around there. Apparently, our good buddy, Vicente Fox, decided it would be a swell idea to bring a bunch of the most violent convicts (inmates, being politically correct) up just near Laredo and then there was this big escape thing and all sorts of fun and frolic.

Welcome to Texas!

AS I WALKED OUT IN THE STREETS OF LAREDO,
AS I WALKED OUT IN LAREDO ONE DAY,
I SPIED A POOR COWBOY WRAPPED UP IN WHITE LINEN,
WRAPPED UP IN WHITE LINEN AS COLD AS THE CLAY.

OH, BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
PLAY THE DEAD MARCH AS YOU CARRY ME ALONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GREEN VALLEY, THERE LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

I SEE BY YOUR OUTFIT THAT YOU ARE A COWBOY,
THESE WORDS HE DID SAY AS I BOLDLY STEPPED BY.
COME SIT DOWN BESIDE ME AND HEAR MY SAD STORY,
I AM SHOT IN THE BREAST AND I KNOW I MUST DIE.

OH, BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
PLAY THE DEAD MARCH AS YOU CARRY ME ALONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GREEN VALLEY, THERE LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

LET SIXTEEN GAMBLERS COME HANDLE MY COFFIN,
LET SIXTEEN COWBOYS COME SING ME A SONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GRAVEYARD AND LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A POOR COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

OH, BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
PLAY THE DEAD MARCH AS YOU CARRY ME ALONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GREEN VALLEY, THERE LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

MY FRIENDS AND RELATION, THEY LIVE IN THE NATION,
THEY KNOW NOT WHERE THEIR YOUNG BOY HAS GONE.
I FIRST CAME TO TEXAS AND HIRED AS A RANCHMAN;
OH, I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

OH, BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
PLAY THE DEAD MARCH AS YOU CARRY ME ALONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GREEN VALLEY, THERE LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

GET SIX JOLLY COWBOYS TO CARRY MY COFFIN;
GET SIX PRETTY MAIDENS TO BEAR UP MY PALL.
PUT BUNCHES OF ROSES ALL OVER MY COFFIN,
PUT ROSES TO DEADEN THE SODS AS THEY FALL.

OH, BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
PLAY THE DEAD MARCH AS YOU CARRY ME ALONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GREEN VALLEY, THERE LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

OH, BURY ME BESIDE MY KNIFE AND SIX-SHOOTER,
MY SPURS ON MY HEELS, MY RIFLE BY MY SIDE.
AND OVER MY COFFIN PUT A BOTTLE OF BRANDY,
THAT THE COWBOYS MAY DRINK AS THEY CARRY ME ALONG.

OH, BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
PLAY THE DEAD MARCH AS YOU CARRY ME ALONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GREEN VALLEY, THERE LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

GO BRING ME A CUP, A CUP OF COLD WATER,
TO COOL MY PARCHED LIPS," THE COWBOY THEN SAID.
BEFORE I RETURNED, HIS SOUL HAD DEPARTED,
AND GONE TO THE ROUNDUP, THE COWBOY WAS DEAD.

OH, BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
PLAY THE DEAD MARCH AS YOU CARRY ME ALONG.
TAKE ME TO THE GREEN VALLEY, THERE LAY THE SOD O'ER ME,
FOR I'M A YOUNG COWBOY AND I KNOW I'VE DONE WRONG.

WE BEAT THE DRUM SLOWLY AND PLAY THE FIFE LOWLY,
AND BITTERLY WEPT AS WE BORE HIM ALONG.
WE ALL LOVED OUR COMRADE, SO BRAVE, YOUNG AND HANDSOME,
WE ALL LOVE OUR COMRADE ALTHOUGH HE'D DONE WRONG.

Good travels, Brother - I hope you like Laredo!

Laredo's not bad. It has gotten a LOT more prosperous over the past decade - Used to be a dusty cowtown before then. For some top-notch breakfast tacos, be sure to check out Cotulla Pit Barbecue, on McPherson Road.

If you get bored, Laredo is only 3 hours north of Monterrey, which is a GREAT place to hop a bus for the weekend. Monterrey womenz and architecture both tend to be of European ancestry - a welcome contrast with the border towns.

Oh, yeah. I know all about the gang/drug war going on there. I was there when it first got really hot this year. Not fun.

I'll be all right, though. I hope...

I'm a bit bummed in one way, though. I was really getting to liking Raleigh...

The best thing about living in Laredo will be cheap perscription drugs with no perscription. Need antibiotics? Heartburn medicine? Just about anything but narcotics is a snap. You drive 5 minutes across the bridge into Nuevo Laredo, you go into a nice little pharmacy that looks as professional as a miniature Eckerd's, they've got english-speaking gals behind the counter that know roughly what dosages people should take for various ailments. You ask and you receive whatever you need cheap. Then you just drive back across to the US with it. I always grab a couple bottles of antibiotics when I'm down in the area, just to stay stocked up for when I have a bad cold or whatever.

As far as Laredo not really being US territory... Hell, by that standard about half of TX is may as well be an unofficial state of Mexico. The whole state actually used to be a part of Mexico, until we declared our independance from them and became the sovereign Republic of Texas on Mar 2, 1836. Then about a decade later, we did the dumbest thing in Texas history - we joined the United States.

Actually, they DIDN'T know. This is a VERY new development (as in "last Friday"). Part of the reason they are treating me well (details should be forthcoming this morning) is because they know this is a major PITA for me, and that they've been yanking said chain since I got here.

Only advice I can give is the same as before, move out into the valley and commute in. Laredo sucks.

Which valley?

I'm fortunate that my current plant manager actually lived in Laredo for a good while. He's Irish, and HUGE, so it's not like he blends in well. I'll be wringing him dry of every tidbit of information I can get out of him.
