My letter to Carl Washington, California Assembly Public Safety Committee chairperson concerning the banning of .50 cal rifles in California.

mattja
April 10, 2002

Carl Washington, Chair
California Assembly Public Safety Committee
State Capitol
P.O. Box 942849
Sacramento, CA 94249-0001
Phone: (916) 319-2052
Fax: (916) 319-2152

Dear Mr. Washington,

I am writing you today to express my opposition to AB2222, a bill that is coming up in your committee on April 16th, that would impose a ban on the private ownership of .50 caliber long-range target rifles in California.

For over 10 years now, California gun owners have been under siege by those who do not recognize our natural, and Constitutional, right to keep and bear arms. In 1989, RR89 forced the registration of militia-style rifles. In 1999, SB23 expanded that registration to include rifles based on feature set and then banned them entirely. Since then we have added bills to require trigger locks with the sale of every gun, limits on handgun purchases to one gun a month, and starting next year, a safety demonstration is required before one can purchase a handgun as well as a renewable handgun license.

Now, with AB2222, our lawmakers would impose a ban on single-shot rifles - rifles that are legal in every state in the union -- simply because they have the ability to reach targets located over 1000 yards away? Enough is enough! It is my belief that we are now in "slippery slope" territory and if this bill is passed, it is just a matter of time before all high-powered rifles are banned in California.

This is why I am telling you today that the time has come for California gun owners to take a stand. For far too long we have allowed that line in the sand to be drawn closer in our direction, but we will tolerate the infringement of our rights no longer.

I, for one, am putting those who would pass unconstitutional laws such as this on notice that I refuse to obey this law. I will not register my target rifle, I will not turn it in, I will not move it out of the state, and I will not bow down and obey unconstitutional ex-post facto laws. It is my property, I purchased it before it was reclassified as an "evil sniper rifle", and I will not surrender it.

Please understand that I am not a "gun nut." My father is a retired lawyer, I am a college graduate and highly compensated engineer, I have a wife and a new baby, and obviously a lot to lose. But I can no longer tolerate the infringement of my rights. I will stand for it no longer.

Therefore, I implore you to oppose AB2222, a thoroughly unnecessary and unconstitutional bill - a misguided solution in search of a problem.

Sincerely,

mattja

The "highly compensated engineer" part was true before I got laid off. he he :) Now I'm just a poor slob.

So, should I expect a visit in the middle of the night pretty soon?

A very brave, well written letter.

Wonder how much longer before the rest of us have to write something similar?

Do let us know what, if any, response you get.

It might seems like a bit much to many but I sure would welcome the "Million Gun March" in Sacremento, CA.

One day something in the state/country is going to snap. And it will be a loud snap indeed. If not soon, if not 50 years from now, eventually people will tire of tyranny.

mattja,

Excellent letter.  I do think California is beyond hope, however.  The state is burying itself in a morass of inane, social reform motivated legislation.  Check out http://www.nolo.com for example.  They sell books, software, etc. on law related subjects for the layman.  Under real estate law they have 5 books listed. Four of the five have "California" in the title.

Screw em.  Move to someplace nice in the "lower 47".

This is a letter that should be sent to all politicians in Kali by everyone concerned about their rights.
A version of it should be sent to all politicians in every state and in D.C., including Bush, Ashcroft, batf and the leaders of our gun rights groups, stating that in effect,
'we are mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore'

This may be our last chance to peacefully regain our rights.

What do you suggest, then?

Oh wait, we've already seen your idea, haven't we?

Quoted:
As far as the moral argument that "my country" has been attacked, all I can say is, this isn't "my country" and hasn't been for quite a long time. I pay nearly half my income in taxes and have no functioning representation in "my government". As far as I'm concerned, it was New York, in all its decandent, decaying socialist splendor that was attacked more than anything else. I used to live there and I can tell you--if the whole city gets nuked at some point, the big loss will be to capitalism, not to the gene pool. Personally, I'd rather see them bust up DC where a comeuppance is so richly deserved.

I beleive you will stand up for what you beleive but how many others will agree with you? Who will actually stand by your side when the time comes? Your veiws are going to be considered extremist in your state.

Best of luck and give 'em hell.

I applaud your "pissing into the wind" effort, and regret deeply that that is most likely what it is. Kalifornia is very likely a lost cause as far as gun rights are concerned, too many people caught up in a fantasy world created by a delusional few. I too recommend moving to another state where you can enjoy your rights, and continue to fight for them peacefully and outside of a jail cell.

I do not mean to belittle your efforts, and would like to say that this is a very well written letter, and pray it has the desired effect.

Someone has to piss in the wind once in a while. And thanks for the good thoughts guys.

The ban has nothing to do with crime or terrorism. The people pushing the effort are the elitists. Those who travel in armored limousines and hide behind any number of bodyguards. The Hollywood elite, politicians, limousine liberals. Having spent small fortunes on security, they will not tolerate the little guy owing weapons capable of piercing their armored refuges.

This is a class issue. The elite feel the "little people" have no right to own such weapons of "mass destruction."

I'm through registering weapons. I will register no more.

10.2% unemployment in Coos County, (thank you environmental wackos). Drop me an e-mail, what kind of engineer are you, any other quals? Some of us sacrafice the $$ for peace and quiet. We are a small county (rural) on the Oregon coast. Good people here.....If you own a home in CA, sell it and buy 2 or 3 here....

Edited to add; we have lists here too, most cops and fire guys are with us......

Jumping in here to point out, there still has  not been a case of these rifles being used in a crime that I am aware of. The ban cannot be justified for that reason, so obviously they have something else in mind...

Nice letter.  I bet alot of those bastards take satisfaction in the fact that they turn honest citizens into criminals.  Maybe you will shame a few of them at least.

The state of California is already tracking honest gun owners as if they are criminals.  The handgun purchase registration records compiled by the state since 1991 are held by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information.  You know - the guys that track felons like murderers and registered sex offenders..

HAHA! Guess where all of the "assault weapon" registration info is being kept:

"I want to register so I won't have to keep looking over my shoulder." Ya right. You have been effectively classified a CRIMINAL by the state DOJ. How much more complacent to you feel about it now?

… Damn!

If I were forced into the condition my fellow neighbors to the left are, I think I would subscribe to Imbroglios' philosophy regarding registration.

I'd submit a "token" revolver or so but I sure as hell WOULD NOT OBEY THE ILLEGAL LAWS!
