So I primarily live in upstate NY, but live in Manhattan a few months out of the year for work (Very nice area on the East side in the Gramercy/Murray Hill area). I always carry a 3 1/2 inch folder and a small can of OC spray with me...since my NY State CCW permit is no good in NYC. (At least I have a NYC rifle shotgun permit and a Rem 870 for apartment defense!)

Anyway, my girlfriend and I go shopping tonight to make a later dinner, then stop into this hole in the wall hardware store around the corner to pick up a few things. We get to the hardware store door, and a trashy looking 17-20 year old kid is at the door, kinda blocking us from coming in.

We figured he was an employee (it's a trashy hardward store so we didn't think anything of his attire). It's around 7pm, so we weren't sure if the store was closed or not, but after a few seconds, he lets us in and we do our shopping.

Strange thing is, nobody else was in the store except for us and this kid. Still not sure if this kid is an employee or not, we ask him if anybody works here. He mumbles something like "I don't know nobody is here..."

We yell a little for someone to come to the front to help us, but nothing. The kid says "nobody is here you should just take what you want and go."

Yeah, no thanks kid.

So after a couple minutes of waiting with this sketchball, we figure we should just come back tomorrow. We leave our merchandise at the counter and leave.

My girlfriend then says, "that kid was totally waiting for us to leave so he could steal shit." I realize she is definitely right, so I walk back to the store window and peer through to see this kid trying to get behind the counter to get to the register. So I'm ready to take out my cell phone and call the cops when the kid sees me through the window and quickly pretends like nothing is going on.

At that moment, the owner of the store finally walks in from the street (Way to leave your freaking store unlocked and unattended for at least 8 minutes idiot). I walk up to the front door and hear the kid say something to the store owner/employee like "I was waiting for help forever but now I'm just gonna leave."

The kid walks out, and me and my girlfriend walk back in to tell the guy what just happened. Before I got the chance, about 10 seconds later 2 plain clothed NYPD officers walk in and ask if that kid stole anything, and say that they had been following the kid all over the city for the past couple hours - I guess he was a suspected shoplifter. The second cop takes off to keep following the kid and the other sticks around to make sure nothing was stolen. He looks at me and my girlfriend and laughs, and says "Ahh you two totally stopped him from stealing stuff!" I laugh and apologize for blowing his "sting operation."

He takes down our name and numbers just in case, and takes off down the street to continue the tail.

Woops.

Was the cop Oriental and answered to the name Ray?  Wearing some new Danners?
I would only ask that if 1. Miss Magnum is in the city 2. If there was overtime to be had 3. If there were porn stars around looking to get their pics on a squad car.

Yeah I told the cop all I saw was the kid trying to get behind the counter, and that the kid told us to "take what we want and leave" since nobody was working.

But yeah, I witnessed no actual crime.

in case the store owner finds something missing, and they can't pin it on the kid so they come after you instead.

Nobody is at least gonna say the OP did a good job of paying attention and probably interrupting a robbery?

I'm sure the owner was at least a bit grateful.

Ha thanks. I try to have decent situational awareness.

What scares me is, we were in the store ALONE for about 5 minutes with this scum bag robber...and I wasn't carrying like I usually do when I;m back home upstate (Rochester area).

NYC really needs to get bitch slapped by Alan Gura soon. (He's currently suing NY State / Westchester County for it's terrible pistol licensing/CCW laws, and it should effect NYC soon...might take a few more court cases though).

Good job I guess but didn't those tingly hairs on the back of your neck stand up and say somethings wrong here, hole in the wall store, scruffy looking guy sort of blocking the door, no one in the store. NYPD followed a supected shop lifter for blocks?

ETA: Nevermind I see your SA post.....

Ahh RAYGUN the member right? He is NYPD.

Well ask him why a team of 3 plain clothed officers spent 3 hours tailing a shoplifter / possible burgler.
