Why would you choose the Steyr at one time and then the AR15 at another when they are both available at both times?

I'll take:
The Great War: 1911 and an '03
WW2: a 1911 and an M1
CW:A 1911 and an M14
and then for today a 1911 and an M14

Why in WW1 did no-one choose the U.S. Enfield??
I have one and it is a fine rifle, in fact more of these where issued to U.S. doughboys then the
much more famous '03 springfield.

Don't get me wrong, I like the '03, but I would choose the p17 Enfield.

Or better then that in WW1 would have been a Lewis gun. The first S.A.W.

It's kind of hard to believe that anyone with any in-depth knowledge of/experience with firearms would, for WW I rifle, pick either an '03 Springfield or an Enfield over a Mauser.
