That may very well be the case, but Afghanistan? Guns and warfare are parts of their culture, we might as well start an ice buy back program in Alaska.

Do you have another suggestion as to the best way to set up an interim/permanent government? If somebody defeated the United States in battle, on our soil, they would be extremely foolish not to take all the guns away, or at least try. Why spend months blasting the military capability of the country to hades, but let the people keep all their guns? You would be allowing the enemy forces the ability to seize power again. In this situation, the people need to be built up, so they are more resistant to oppressive dictatorship we just overthrew. The situation needs to be stabilized, and the first step to stabilizing it is to remove the power of the oppressors. You need to read about Denazification. |

A couple weeks ago at the Afghan weapons turn in, there were three "Stinger" missiles still in the crate which got turned in.
Anyone else catch that? |

Only one problem with the "gun buy-back" scheme: They have town gunsmiths who can make an AK from scratch. Guns and revenge are a part of the culture. It'll probably just piss people off. I hope you haven't forgotten the reason the 2nd was put into the BOR. Tyranny will rise quickly if the people of Afghanistan are disarmed. It's already happened there. Besides the fact that the people will see this as an attempt by the evil Americans to control Afghanistan, which is exactly what this is. Huge waste of money that will be counter-productive. |

I think you are missing something very important. Very few of the local Afghans support the Taliban, and disarmement would permit another enslavement of the people. The only reason you would disarm a populace is because you wanted to control their contry and were afraid of them. Afghanistan belongs to the Afghans, and we should pretty much let them be. The exception to this is that we should destroy all who support or participate in terrorism. Civilians should be able to keep their guns, and determine thier own government. If they screw up, we will defeat them again. |

Redman and Torf, I agree with both of you. I had interpreted the disarmament as a short term deal. Nowhere is that stated, however.
Yes, I remember why the 2nd is there [;)] My post is a product of staying up a little too long. I was interpreting the situation as the disarmament was just for the period of time where the situation could be stabilized. My apologies if I am in error. |

If their local gun "manufacturers" can turn out copies of the AK, this could be the nation's big industry, making guns to "turn back" to us dumb Americans.
