That was horrible. View Quote It always gets dusty when I think about them. When they died I was on day 16 at another fire. You could have heard a pin drop in fire camp. It was devastating to morale...command swapped out several crews just to make sure everyone had their heads on straight. |

Im at Ground Zero here in Prescott. No one ever forgets them.

I had just moved out here to Prescott when it happened. Granite Mountain itself had been on fire just a few weeks prior to the Yarnell fire.

They were all really good guys and they were a really good crew. it physically hurts to think about still.

It is over 100 degrees here and I got a chill reading this thread.

Bump for heroes, doing what they do. Real men like you and I who volunteered to take care of business. To do what they thought was right and needed.

Based on all evidence, they unfortunately died following the errant orders of the acting crew leader who attempted to unsafely move them to prtoect structure he had a vested interest in. There is no logical explanation for them being in the place they were when they were burned over. Just another reminder to think for yourself in all situations, and always question authority. Numerous violations of the standard firefighting orders...

It's about a different fire and a different group of men who died...but everytime I think of the Yarnell 19, I think of this book http://flyfishchick.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/young-men-and-fire.jpg View Quote His son ended up writing a couple good books too. But young men and fire is an outstanding read. |
