So I just got distracted by MythBusters where they're trying to shoot a merry-go-round into motion.  This is relevant to my interests, so I turn it on.

First they shoot a Glock, and refer to it as a Glock, but not the model type, only that it's a 9mm.

Then they shoot a Smith and Wesson .44 magnum.

Then they shoot a .45, but no mention of make or model.

What gives?

Lowest common denominator.

Most of their fan base are probably NOT "gun people".

Didn't they label the Beretta as a Glock?

and their gun handling is absolutely atrocious, the camera and sound guys have probably been swept hundreds of times

I cringed during one episode where they repeatedly loaded a 1911 by placing a round in the chamber and pressing the slide stop

Kari is probably the most gun savvy on the show now.

The ones who care know the gun when they see it.

Lt Normandy, their firearms advisor from a few years back, is/was a member here.

IIRC, he said if you look close at some of their vehicles, you'll see BFLs.

I'll officially forgive Kari for being a veggie now.

Yeah. Plus giving the .45 about three times actual FPS.

I'm not a 1911 guy but what exactly is the problem with that?  Those guys tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to safety, but when the objective of your experiment is to fire one round and one round only why not just drop it in the chamber and eliminate a safety risk?

There's a common misconception that this will damage the extractor.

ETA: Just noticed the slide stop bit. I probably wouldn't do it from slide lock because of the resultant impact to the lower barrel lugs. Of course the extractor would soften that blow somewhat. Too tired to think that one through fully.

In the movie they used a Beretta. Myth busters was all " we need to use the same exact guns, a glock".

5:44ish in my above post.

Big time.
Apparently some here do not understand the do's and don'ts of the 1911....

A while back a 1911 smith, one of the Heirloom Precision guys IIRC, published his findings of dropping the slide on a loaded chamber 10,000 times with no resultant damage. I've seen a long time gunsmith associate of mine do it several times himself. Moreover, slamming the rim over that style of extractor is how the M3 submachine gun works by design.

I still don't do it because of personal preference, but don't make an issue of the practice.

were u talking about the marry go round episode.  They have found some of the most creative ways to waste tax payer money (grant money) and they have accomplished what most of us already knew would or would not happen.

Not going to watch the rest of it, if they shoot it with a 50cal and it goes through did they not expect it to penetrate?  I mean they acted surprised when the 44 mag went through it.

It appeared to be a pretty old probably pre 70s series  Gold Cup

They are a bunch of San Fran hippies. It's a miracle they even touch guns.

That episode is on right now, and it appears to be a G17, and they said it was 9mm. Not sure of the 1911 make though.

because the show isn't about guns?  the guns are only incidental to the show?  Thus, the lack of details?
