and I'd have to say it was better than I thought it would be. It was cheezy and campy but the character developement was still pretty good. Anyway, I learned 2 things while watching the movie:
1) Commies suck ass.
2) I need to stock up on more ammo.

That is all.

Those of you too young to have grown up in the 60's and 70's missed out on hating the USSR.
You also missed rotary dial phones and 8 track tapes among other things as well.

Wait, you've been here 2 years and just now watched it? I thought it was required viewing?

And you shouldn't have to learn those things from a movie, commies have always sucked and you always need more ammo.

Ownership of the Red Dawn DVD should be required for this site.

Sure, it's not a trailblazer in the world of acting and cinematography, but you won't see any more movies with the plotline of Red Dawn again!

I didn't care for it--thought it was lame but I doubt you'll see anything like it also.

It really upset the Soviets when it came out. Not to mention the Socialist 5th Column here in the US. Those asshats loved the Soviet Union. Now they have to focus their attn on Venezuela, China and illegal immigrants. "Power to the People!"

LMAO. Pathetic fuckers.

How was it that you just saw that movie?!?!?!

I remember walking home from the movies after seeing that.  I was just a kid, but I was already reading the Combat and Survival books and all the mag's....

I remember this one picture that FREAKED me out.  There was a US military convoy driving down this road and there was a VW Van parked across the street with Hippies piling out of it, AK's in hand.  You could see the Red and White striped undershirts!!  <gasp> Spetsnaz!

Know your Enemy! <sniff> I miss those old days.  I already knew how to field strip an AK before I bought one cause I was reading up on them for the capture of enemy arms...

Red Dawn

Triva from IMDB:

   *  The original trailer that comes on the laserdisc shows a scene with a tank rolling up to a McDonald's restaurant where enemy soldiers are eating. This scene does not appear in the final cut, and may have been removed due to a mass murder at a San Ysidro, CA McDonald's just weeks prior to the film's opening.

   * The radio announces: "John has a long mustache", the same message the French resistance gets in The Longest Day (1962).

   * The movie being shown to American prisoners at the Russian camp near Calumet is Aleksandr Nevskiy (1938).

   * This film was entered into the Guinness Book of Records as having the most acts of violence of any film up to that time. It was calculated that on average an act of violence occurs at a rate of 134 per hour or 2.23 per minute.

   * The cast underwent a "realistic", intensive 8 week military training course before starting work on the movie.

   * The movies replica Russian T-72 tank was such a precise replica that when it was transported to the studio, two CIA agents followed and wanted to know where it had come from.

   * The plot for the movie, a Russian invasion from Mexico, etc., was based on CIA and War College studies of US weaknesses at the time.

   * This was the first motion picture released with the PG-13 rating, which had been created after difficulty rating some movies in 1984, most notably Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). (The Flamingo Kid (1984) was the first film to be *given* a PG-13 rating, but sat on the shelves for five months before being released).

   * The illustration of Gengis Khan in the High School classroom at the beginning of the film is a caricature of director John Milius.

   * Five parachutists dressed as Soviet soldiers were blown as much as a mile off course during the filming of the invasion scene at the start of the film.

Goofs:

Red Dawn

   * Audio/visual unsynchronized: Jed's truck tires squeal as he comes to a stop on a grassy hill when they first veer off-road to avoid an enemy roadblock.

   * Crew or equipment visible: Special effects guide wire can be seen when Cuban paratroopers launched a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) into the high school.

   * Revealing mistakes: In the opening scene where the school falls under attack, the first person shot (the black teacher) has the blood pack explode out of sync from the bullets being fired at his chest.

   * Continuity: After the Colonel's 45 is emptied while standing on top of the tank, it continues to fire after the slide has locked back.

   * Factual errors: The tagline for this movie is "No Foreign Army Has Ever Occupied American Soil". This is incorrect. The British Army captured Washington D.C. during the War of 1812. They even managed to set fire to the Whitehouse. In 1942 the Japanese seized the islands of Attu, Kiska, and Agattu in Alaska's Aleutian chain. Not a U.S. State but still U.S. "soil". Americans retook the islands the following year.

   * Continuity: The front of Jennifer Grey's jacket is torn open by gunfire from a Russian chopper; a split-second later, as the camera switches angles, the jacket is undamaged once again... and then she receives the same mortal wound from this new angle.

Burn that into your memory.

And people wonder why gun owners are against "registering guns like we do cars."

Now picture some natural disaster in your city, and some assclown of a mayor orders guns to be seized, and out of state LEO's gladly "just follow orders".

Part of it is still on the DVD, in one of the trailers for the film.

I'd be curious to know whether the laserdisk looked any cleaner than the DVD (which has all kinds of film crackles, scratches, audio pops, etc.).

Considering this is regarded as one of the best "cheesey" films of all time, someone really should release a special edition DVD (with cleaned up film quality, out-takes, a narrative by the director, etc.).

Pretty sure the hating the USSR was well into the 80's I was born in '82 and can remember them always showing who won how many medals between the USA and USSR. I dunno I have a pretty good memory going back quite a bit, I remember Reagan in office like it was yesterday, not bad considering he left office when I was in 1st grade.

I was a teenager when Red Dawn was released. I thought the idea of Russians ever setting foot on American soil was ridiculous. I was one dumb kid that had no clue of current events back then!

It wasn't until the early 90's that I realized what was really going on back in the 80's. The democracts were doing their DAMNDEST to create a communist foothold in Central America, do away with our nukes, etc. etc.

The Red Dawn movie would probably be a documentary if that idiot carter was re-elected, followed by that idiot mondale and so on.

The Video part looks like it was dubbed directly from the Lazer (I have both), The audio on the Lazer seems crisper than the DVD.
What we need is a remastered extended cut DVD
But with how left Hollywood has become I doubt we will ever see one
