Well thanks to some good for nothing politicians here in North Carolina I will be losing my job come Oct. 15. The laws that regulated the industry I work in expired and they just don't have the time to renew them. Yet they passed a law to make sure body piercing is sanitary but, just don't have the time to allow myself and 3000 others to keep our jobs. Yep I lost my job because of some lowlife, bottomfeeding, piece of xxxx politicians can't find time to do anything other than line their own pockets. I may move to a place where the f***ing politicians are not so damn backwards. I can't believe this shit. You know if losing my job wasn't enough they have allowed the large national companies to find a way around the expired laws and still do business. So they have essentially removed all their competition for them. The new rates they charge are higher than what we were allowed to charge before hand. I should have seen the writing on the wall when I was told by a lobbyists for the industry that the assocations president had sold his business in the industry to one of the big national companies just before the sunset of the laws. I think that bastard owes all of the members of the association some returned dues. It may be a place for a lawsuit due to conflict of interest. Damn am I ever mad. God do I ever hate politicians. They aren't good for anything. I think I should quit ranting now.

I am in the payday lending industry. I am the supervisor over 4 offices. Had a fairly good paying job but, due to those bastards it will be gone. Have had a offer from the company to move and open another location in another state. Of course I think this will be at a lower salary. I hate politicians. I hope every damn one of them gets voted out of office. Never been to Arizona is the state all desert(spelling?).

Sorry Pal...No sympathy here. The Paycheck Cashing/Payday Lending industry along with the Auto Title Loan business is a morally corruping business. The owners and managers of these business are the Bottomfeeders in this case. These industries prey on the desperate and already poor and entraps them into the continued bondage of debt. Go get a real job where you can proudly say that what you do helps your fellow man, not attaches lead weight to him while he's trying to swim.
Link Posted: 9/30/2001 8:33:09 PM EDT
Morally corrupting? So you believe in government control and intervention in all commerce? I admit that payday loans are a bit of scam, but just because some law expired doesn't mean that they should all go out of business overnight. That is absurd. When a law expires, there should always be more freedom, not less. Sorry you lost your job biggun. Any interest in lynching some of the traitors who did it to you? That's the only way things are going to get better you know. Hate to say it, but NC is going to be just like NJ in 5 more years unless a very clear message is sent. Citizens for a Sane Economy is working hard, but without the threat of force, I don't think anyone is going to get it. And now I've said too much. I would suggest you read the novel "Unintended Consequences" and then make your own plans.

Payday loan centers are like legalized loan sharking. I'm glad that they are closing them down. One of the biggest opponets to payday loan centers and auto title companies is the military. Alot of young service members get trapped by the payday loan scheme and end up in finincial trouble due to these places. Good riddance, I say. To bad that you are losing your job, but if you managed 4 of these places, yo ushould be able to get another decent job. [smoke]

A guy needs to borrow money till payday. Someone willing to lend the money, but at a high rate because of the risk. WTF business does the government have saying they can't do this. There are probably a bunch of poor guys out there who live from paycheck to paycheck, working their asses off to stay off welfare. So when their POS car breaks down, they end up having to chose between fixing their car and feeding their families. Payday loan may be their only access to any kind of credit. Why not also ban credit cards that the average guy uses when they have cash flow problems? They too get lots of people in finacial trouble. I kinda like having immediate access to massive amounts of cash at absurd interest rates to take care of emergency situations, until I can tap other resoures to pay for it.

Sorry you lost you job, dude. I also did due to the recent events of 9/11, and government interferance. As you can see, most people put Payday loan workers in the same catagory as Lawyers and Politicians. Try to see this as an opportunity. Good luck

A similar thing happened to my father when Klinton took office. When Klinton took office he fired everybody including the guy in charge of the branch who contracted the company my dad worked for. As a result, when the contract came up for renewal in Feb. 1993 there was nobody to sign it and he was out of work until Klinton picked somebody to replace him nearly 6 months later and the damned papers finally got signed.

That's because they were needing some extra legislation passed to raise the allowable interest rate within the confines of the law. "Payday" loan sharkers are WORSE than politicians and attorneys. I would even go so far as to say that they're worse than anti-gunners. They are the scum of the Earth who prey on people who are already up to their eyeballs in debt and sucker them into a deeper hole from which they can never break free in several lifetimes. Once someone gets reeled in, it's just robbing Peter to pay Paul from there on until doomsday. Maybe you guys could be used for cannon fodder against Osama. I can't think of a better use of your types.

There is worse. I went 2 cents over my balance once on a debit card, but had a Direct Deposit that was sent out at 6:00 PM the previous night and would be credited the next morning. At 7:00 I went down to the store and bought some stuff. I stopped by some more stores and prchased evertyhing I would need since I was leaving on a trip the next day. Well, the bank took the 7 PM debits out and hit me with NSF/Overdraft Fees ($28) on each of my charges, which were relatively small. 2 $28 NSF charges zapped my account. My Deposit was $40 just so you know. Since my charges were only a few dollars and I was keeping track of my balance in my balance book I didn't realize this had happened. A few more charges and when my next Direct Seposit came throught the next week it was immediately taken to cover NSF Fees and I was still overdrawn. Not knowing I continued to use the card thinking I had money. Several small charges each hit with $28. OK. So, in the end I was hit with over $200 in NSF Charges for a 2 cent overdraft which they already had the money for and credited the deposit only 14 Hours Later. So 14 Hours at $200 interest for 2 Cents. That comes out to. Get this: 10,000% Simple Interest or 1,028,571% a Month that is a Million percent. or get this 12,342,857% A.P.R. (Annual Percentage Rate) BTW, the damned Bank was Washington Mutual. I refused to pay since the entire overdraft charge was NSF Fees that resulted from them taking debits out before crediting a deposit, when they had money in hand already when the debits were put through. There wasn't supposed to hold Direct Deposits. That is supposed to be a damned advantage. Well, long story short they reported me to the Credit Bureau and I ended up getting it removed. In the end the got about $100 of my money before I found out. They were nice enough to send me a notice I was overdrawn 2 weeks later. Because I was a good customer they had extended several hundred dollars in "overdraft protection", which I told them in the first place I didn't need or want since I rarely write checks (once a month for rent) [/ANGER TOWARDS LENDERS/BANKS/ETC.]

Noooo, as I understand it their law had a "sunset" in North Carolina and the loan sharkers were looking to get it extended. The military has been lobbying HARD against these assholes for years and no doubt worked to have this bullshit kept out. I would think that having some bases like Ft. Bragg, Camp Lejeune, and Cherry Point would make for a fairly strong argument against the loan shark activities within their state. Too bad, too sad. Ye reap what ye sow.
Link Posted: 10/1/2001 10:34:32 PM EDT
I don't think there is much sympathy here for those loan outfits, just as there is little sympathy for title loan firms, fortune tellers, pawn shops, drug dealers, and telemarketers that scam senior citizens. But the one thing they have in common is you have to choose to use them. No one twists your arm. There is sin everywhere -- you just need to try to be strong and avoid it. After saying that, all I would add is I won't be shedding any tears if all those guys go under.
Link Posted: 10/2/2001 8:12:32 PM EDT
Some of the guys are blinded by what you read in papers. It is a legitimate and needed service. I will admit the fees can seem high. But, in comparison they are cheap. If your electric is cutoff due to a late $100 bill how much does it cost to have it reconnected? I bet it is a lot more than 17 bucks. What do you do if you have a tire blow out and you don't get paid for another week? I guess you say stay at home and miss work. What happens if your wife messes up the check book and you realize you don't have enough to cover your rent payment? How much will the bounced check cost you? I bet up to 35 bucks at the bank and whatever you are charged by the recepient of your check(usually 25). Wait a minute don't forget about the late charges you can never forget them(usually around 5 bucks a day). If you want the real value of the industry you need to ask a customer. I have customers tell me on a daily basis how much help we have been. There are many examples that I can provide that show how much the service is needed and appreciated. I will admit a few people do abuse the service but, this is not a fault of the industry. It is a common human fault. How many people do you know that abuse their credit cards or how about their checking accounts? I bet you guys have a long list. I can give you tons of names of people who go from business to business to business. And it is not that they were lured in or were suckers. It is that they just wanted the money usually for something frivalous. Just like one guy who came and borrowed some money from me on a few occasions. I found out later he was using the money to go to the dogtrack. Found that out from his wife when doing collections on that account. Most of you guys are just like the anti-gunners you will believe anything you see in the paper. How many of you have actually been in a store? I doubt any of the dissenters. The really lousy part of this is only the small companies had to go out of business. The large national companies found a way around the laws by teaming with a national bank. This avenue is not available to smaller companies. So it means that the state removed the competition for the big companies. And guess what! Surprise Surprise Surprise! The rates that the large companies now charge is higher than what we were allowed previously. I think MADMATT has the right idea except it is not massive amounts of money. The most we could advance was $255. RENAMED that is almost exactly the same thing I asked the people from the state "how could something that is not prohibited not be permitted?" JIM DANDY are you one of those people who think that since "the gov/military wants something" that it is right. Those servicemen they are worried about are makinghe same thing mistake millions of other young people make yearly. They don't try to manage their debt. I bet those same servicemen have outragous credit card debt. I don't really know anything I can tell you guys. Some have already made up your minds. And "you can't reason with the unreasonable". And just to think all this was over me wanting to rant a little. So I guess you should come over and kick a guy in the ribs to make yourself feel better. I meant the enter at your own risk due to my out of line foul language. My appologies for it.
Link Posted: 10/2/2001 8:13:51 PM EDT
You guys think we are the badguys you should see what stunts the "potential customers" try to pull. We caught a young woman a few weeks ago using multiple social security cards. Of course we reported it to the SSA and they did nothing about it. I found out she had used one number to steal about 2 grand from several companies. Then she got a new card with her name and started to do rounds again. Which is where we caught her. I found two other numbers she was using after doing a little digging. These are the cannon fodder we should use.

How many of you guys own or profit from a company that has tons of minimum wage workers. I think you just might be taking advantage of the poor. With that I will gladly tell you most of the customers are not very poor. Most make a reasonable wage.

Actually biggun, it ain't the newspapers influencing my views. I'm basing what I know and see from my years in the Navy as well as what I've seen around the military bases here in Oklahoma. You guys take bad situations and someone's bad fiscal decisions and make things worse. Guess you'll be standing in line at the unemployment office right along with the same people upon whom you've preyed, huh? Sounds like you may just be getting your just desserts. I don't have any sympathy for you, your line of work, or anyone else who looks to make a living off of someone else's misfortunes. Your industry and those like you tend to set up shop around military bases and low income neighborhoods. You know, people who don't really have much of a say as to what goes on around them. So-called "good" neighborhoods won't put up with it. No tears from me for you. Too bad, too sad.
Link Posted: 10/4/2001 7:22:20 PM EDT
I guess you know it all don't you guys. You are so smart. Kinda sounds to me like you have been on the wrong side of some collections. I guess you guys have never needed a little cash until you get paid. I bet all the customers would like to trade jobs and checking accounts with you. And no wonder that the soldiers are borrowing money they don't get paid squat! I wish you guys could have came to work with me for a day. You would see how much it has helped people. The financial messes people are in are usually caused by themselves. Since you don't want them to have an alternative to getting their electric cutoff why don't you pay their bill!
Link Posted: 10/4/2001 7:43:51 PM EDT
Another great idea why don't you let the navy guys borrow money from you? What you wouldn't do that? Why not?
Link Posted: 10/4/2001 7:49:06 PM EDT
One more thing the "shooting". I think that is in very bad taste. If you don't like my profession that is all and good. Everyone should be able to have an opinion. But, talking like that makes gun owners look bad. You won't ever hear me say anything like that. Or is that you guys are the morons? What would you guys have someone do when their electric is about to be cutoff? How about a reasonable answer instead of "going hunting".
Link Posted: 10/4/2001 7:55:04 PM EDT
Spectre the payday advance companies do not make as much money as you think. There are a few that make a bundle but, they are mostly the large national companies. If a customer has a problem they won't even talk to them about a way to sort it out.
Link Posted: 10/4/2001 7:57:50 PM EDT
You know in my opinion the military is one of the worst abusers of the "poor". They have a mostly young force without much education and no wealth. Hell how many of our soldiers are on foodstamps? Why are they not paid better.

I've got one for you. The Navy as well as other branches of the military and the legitimate lending institutions have done things for the communities in which they're located and operate. You know, sponsor things, tutor in schools, contribute food baskets, etc. What have the payday loan scum done? Don't bother answering, it's a rhetorical question and the obvious answer is NOTHING.

One of the few things our legislature did RIGHT this session, which is still going on even though they were supposed to end June 30, was not to renew the payday lenders. They didn't change any laws, the industry knew that it was an "experiment" and the law ALLOWING IT would sunset. The lenders took the chance that it would be extended and they lost thinks to the wisdom of the legislature. There was no guarantee that anyone in the business would be allowed to continue after a certain date...if someone chose to enter under these circumstances, then they shouldn't bitch about lossing a gamble. After all, it was the legislature that initially allowed the limited time operation of these businesses...why don't you bitch about that. A crooked business run out of the state...now if we can just get rid of some of the inept politicians. By the way, don't much care for someone who lists KY as their location bitching about our laws...if you want to cheat our citizens out of their money, the least you could do reside in the state!
Link Posted: 10/5/2001 7:29:14 PM EDT
elk, deer, javelina, ducks, doves....I don't know. Went dove hunting. I've only been here 8 months. Moved from Northern Michigan. we hunted old abandoned refrigerators up there. Great for accuracy practice. I really don't enjoy hunting like I used to because its become something that law enforcement is spoiling. I resent their intrusion. I target shoot military style rifles.
Link Posted: 10/5/2001 7:37:48 PM EDT
biggun. don't argue with the military guys. they are always right in every situation. if you were in the military you would understand. see, these guys get orders from up top. way up. and then they don't need to roll it around in their mind at all because thats already been done for them.each thought is like a frozen dinner. its already made up to look like the real thing. just pop it in and "WAALAH!"

Now you two can be slackers in arms, Cheatum & Steele, Fatty Farkle and Sparkle Farkle, dumb and dumber. One can operate a payday loan center and the other can sell malt liquor next door.
Link Posted: 10/5/2001 8:12:09 PM EDT
FWIW biggun, since you continue to tell us how badly you were cheated out of a job, and how your services are so necessary at 30+percent interest, I've got an idea...you are now unemployed, and if you ever need to pay your electric bill, you can support your indusry compatriots by getting a payday loan from them. I'm a Christian, but I do believe somewhat in "Karma" you know... "what you do comes back to you" If you were as intelligent as you sound on the posts, you would see this as an opportunity to take a good hard look at the people that you've been sucking in to the almost never ending cycle of loan/payment/loan/payment and take a bearing on what you really want to do now that you are unemployed. Money isn't everything. Believe me. Having some semblance of a conscience and being able to sleep at night knowing that God isn't pissed at you, is. And most sincerely I mean this, I hope your next career opens your heart to your fellow man instead of lining your pockets with their ignorance.

I don't highly of politicians in general , Some are good but the bad ones seem to rot the whole barrel . I feel that pay day lenders are even worse . Maybe this is really an omen for you to get a job doing something positive for humanity instead of for the almighty dollar . If you are really hurting for mula just give yourself a "payday loan " " physcian , heal thyself " Jim dandy has hit the nail pretty square on the head .
Link Posted: 10/5/2001 8:39:25 PM EDT
Keith the state did not do away with the industry. They simply run the North Carolinian owned companies out of business and let the large national companies do business. Everyone seems to believe that every person that comes thru the door is sucked into some bottomless pit of payday advance. This is right from the newspapers. The whole deal is not meant to be used like that. It is intended to be used at the most periodicly(sp?). None of the good companies behaved that way. Including the company I work for. You do need to remember that it is the customer that goes and asks for stuff. They are the ones that abuse the services. If they don't get the money at one store they will get it somewhere else. That is the reasoning some company owners use to believe to let customers abuse the service. I honestly believe the service is a service and not a disservice. People not in the industry seriously do need to talk to a few customers. There views might just change. I have been in the spot where I could have used the money myself. You are right money is not everything. And I believe your christianity should come out in the way you handle your collections. I admit the service seems expensive but you need to see the management side of it. After you pay rent and payroll and your losses each month the fees don't add up all that quick. In my opinion if everyone actually knew the real profits in many businesses we would be shocked. Did you know that jewelry at retail is marked up between 300-700 percent!!! My mom is friends with several jewelers and that is the answer they have given her. Did you know that grocery stores lose money on every gallon of milk they sell? They only carry it to bring people in the store. How much does the Dodge dealership make on new trucks? Would you believe the manufacturer sends each truck out with a price sticker. They are just like the ones you see at the dealership. But when the dealer receives the truck they take it off and mark the truck up as they see fit. My moms sisters husband bought a new dodge and caught them getting them off truck. Can you imagine the truck was priced at 28grand and they had told him the price would be a few hundred dollars short of 40 grand. He ended up buying it after the haggling and them finding out he had seen the manuf. real price tag for around 26500. Why should anyone be able to make 14000 off a new truck? I knew that dealers did this before my uncle did this(dad is a used dealer and good friends with a bunch of new dealers). If we knew what everyone made of off their wares we would be constantly pissed off. The reason why I told you this stuff? Is because you are only pissed about the payday loans because you know what the markup is.

Just one more thing for tonight. If all these things you say is true show me some proof. And I mean real proof not just more this is true and that is true. I have had enough of your bull. Legitimate(sp?). I can't believe you said that. We are licensed and audited just like a bank is. The states actually use the same auditors that audit the banks. If you don't believe me contact the North Carolina Commissinor of Banks. A fine gentleman by the name of Rodney Oldham is the person in charge of the payday lending area. Call and ask him.
