I have about 1 acre in the city.  No neighbors behind me, but a couple to the side.  All the grass in my backyard is different types.  It's all dead/dormant now.  I'd like to burn it all now to fertilize the soil then seed in the spring.

What tools do I use to burn it and where would I find them at?  Just a torch/flame style adapter for a propane tank?

Should I wait till spring to burn or do it now?

Napalm!!! It smells like VICTORY!

Seriously, winter is good time to do it but ask the local Fire Dept.
They may be coming out anyways if there is a wind.
Get ok from them.

I burn stuff all the time back there.  I've got 6 foot privacy fence up for the dogs, so no one can see.  We have a backyard firepit we use frequently, and I burn our office paper back there instead of paying to shred it.

Get some burlap, spray it with fuel, drag it around the yard...

You don't want to get fuel down into the dirt. My neighbor has done it the above way.

May I suggest some combination of gasoline, propane, tannerite and lighter fluid?  A homemade fougasse has yet to make an appearance on ARFCOM - to the best of my knowledge.

Get some gasoline and fill up one of those little Hudson garden sprayers with it. Completely saturate your whole yard with gas, wait about 10 minutes, and throw a match on the area.

ETA: Don't forget to post pics!

Sit down and pound back a few and post pics of what happens.

Round Up would do the job, but it would not be any fun.

I would check with your local authorities, you may need to have a burn permit to do that and could be in big trouble if you don't have one and they find out.  Burning an acre of grass is going to make a lot more smoke and such than your office paper.  I would also talk to your neighbors I would be PISSED if I owned a house and my neighbor decided to burn his lawn it gets out of control and it burns my lawn at best and my house at worse.  You could be in some deep shit if you don't take the proper precautions.

A word of warning about Harbor Freight's propane torches:

They don't use the most robust gas hoses.  There have been recalls.  The hoses are easy to burn through.  If you do that, with the valve wide open on your propane tank, you may end up with a flaming version of Water Wiggle.

Another vote here for an application of Roundup.

Regular roundup lasts about two weeks then stuff will grow again.

You could see if you could rent a couple of goats for a month, they'd take care of any law you have.

Give a quarter to a dog owner everytime a dog pees in your yard. I would go out of my way to help you out on this one.

Just plant zoysia plugs in the spring.   You will never need to worry about your lawn again.
