so after building my 5.56 AR, and then building an AK, i want to set my sights on a .308.

after looking at all the options, im going crazy.
here is what ive narrowed it (HA!) down to.

LMT .308 MWS
KAC SR-25 EMC
Noveske N6 (16 or 18")
GAP AR-10
GAP Gladius (not sure if want to go bolt route or not, but damn its a sexy rifle)
Larue Stealth OBR (probably 16")

i want to be able to run and gun with it (minus the Gladius if i decide on that), so i will be going collapsible stock, probably 16". but i also want to do some prone precision shooting.

any thoughts/advice/flaming (this is GD after all), are welcome.

Larue OBR will make up for your poll fail.

Needs Armalite AR-10 option.

Mega Machine!

from what I've seen, the Larue OBR is the most bang for the buck.
for a little more, the LMT may be the way to go. They look awfully impressive.

I absolutely love my SR25 EMC, but for considerably less the LaRue OBR is a damn fine rifle also.
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 12:33:21 PM EDT
ummmm.... FAL ftw?
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 12:47:20 PM EDT

If you can afford it, the Knights rifle would be excellent.

FAL
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:13:18 PM EDT
Get a FAL and prosper
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:13:28 PM EDT
Of the options you put forth in your OP, I don't think there's a single one that will disappoint (though I don't know jack about the GAP).

Although if I had the scratch right now to get one it would be a platform that uses DPMS magazines to exploit the LR PMags.

I'll take the M60 option.

I know a Fun Store that has one for sale at $38,000 before taxes.

Armalite AR10, target model...
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:20:54 PM EDT
GAP rifle, no question. Gladius is nice, but if you want to spend a hair more, the HRT rifle is the shit! If you want sem-auto, get their AR10.

I have an LWRC i was considering selling to pay some debt down, but i woudlnt exclude it from your list, its cheaper than the KAC.
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:33:52 PM EDT
AR 10's are very good rifles.
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:37:35 PM EDT
The KAC rifle is very nice, but grossly over-priced.
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:40:27 PM EDT
FAL.
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:43:41 PM EDT
Of the two in the poll, LMT. Expanding to the full list from your post, LaRue. Expanding still further, I got myself an LWRC REPR.

I am considering an OBR, though, maybe in a year or two.

Where the hell is your M1A option?
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 1:47:24 PM EDT
LMT is just as good and not as pricey.

Times 2; Right Arm of the Free World for a reason. Still a viable(and best)answer.

Get yourself an ArmaLite AR-10 A4 rifle. It will do everything the more expensive rifles will do and the money you save can go towards ammo and mags.
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 2:20:52 PM EDT
FAL.

Since you asked:

- .308 rifles are heavier than you think. They start around 9.5 - 10 pounds, empty. Would you like to load it, like with ammunition? One loaded 20-round mag weighs around 1.5 pounds. Want an optic? A sling? A light? If you intend to "run and gun," look for the lightest weight. For example, thin barrel vs. heavy target barrel. Otherwise, you won't run very far or very fast.

- Long barrels (20" - 22") are awkward in buildings, vehicles, close brush. But 16" barrels have tremendous flash and noise –– very unpleasant. IMO, 18" is the best length for a .308 barrel. Smith Vortex is the best flash suppressor I have tried, but I have not tried them all.

- Collapsible stock is good, for easier transport. Folding stock, like the FAL Paratrooper variant, is even better.

I have the Armalite SASS, it's a very nice rifle, shoots great, Armalite also has the AR10(T) models, they are also very nice, little less money, my friend has one and it's a very accurate rifle. The other option that is more money would be the LaRue OBR, don't have any "hands on" experience, but with Larue it will be very nice. The Knights products while very well made are over priced in my opinion, I would also go with a DI gas vs the piston. Another way to go would be the GA Precision models, buy their upper and put it on a Iron Ridge Arms billet lower assy.

FAL or M1A
Link Posted: 9/6/2010 4:26:14 PM EDT
They are all good, but the KAC is the best, yes it is more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Absolutely. I had about as tricked out an AR10 as you could ask for. Started life as an Armalite 20" AR10, but added an ARMS #51 SIR rail system, flip up sights, and a SIghtron SIII 3.5-10x50 in Leupold QRW rings. By the time I mounted the Harris bipod and a loaded mag, it was over 15lbs. It felt like carrying a frickin' railroad cross tie, and that was only one magazine.

Scar 17s is what you want guy. Can't believe no one said it yet.

Fits every requirement you listed plus weighs 8lbs empty. Have fun running and gunning with the other rifles you listed.

SR25 EMC.

If I were to get a .308 AR my choice would be the LWRC REPR. You should consider a FAL though. Great guns.

Question for the guys recommending KAC, do you really feel the extra $2500 - $3000 additional to the cost of other models mentioned, Armalite / Larue is worth it? Are thet THAT good?

You can find them for about 1800 more or so than larue/mws.

Its lighter, has less recoil, ambi controls, supposed to be able go 5000 suppressed without cleaning, a bunch of other nice stuff. I thought it was worth it.

I own an AR10 too, I much prefer the SR
