looking for something in the $15,000 or less range. Im'm thinking of a Ferret Scout Car. Is there anything else you would recommend?

I would recommend that you hook a brother up with some money so I can pay off some debts... Thats what I recommend christ I've never even FATHOMED buying an armored vehicle!
Maybe you can see about military surplus. We had a vehicle in the AF Security police called a "Peacekeeper". It was a Dodge Ramcharger chasis with heavy duty leaf springs and armor rated to stop 7.62 x 51. The windows were rated for that too. It had a top hatch that had a mount for an M60 machinegun and run flat tires.

I remember seeing those at teh gates of Airbases in Germany in the eighties, they looked pretty cool. Didn't they use solid tires as well? |
Ferret is about your only option at 15K, as mentioned the peacekeepers that would be cool but there 25-30K min. if you can find one, they don't turn up very often as PD's usually use them as swat vehicles and yes they had solid rubber tires and a 318 IIRC, maybe it was a 340. Depending on what state you live in a half track is a possibilty as some states allow tracked vehicles to be street legal. WW2 halftracks in good running condition can still be had in the 15-20K range. The british PIG is another possibility as is a Saracen that needs work. Another option is a shorland armored car which is basically a series 2 land rover armored with a ferret turret, dave urig had one for sale for the longest time it may still be available although i do not believe its still listed on his site. dave urig (sp.)

Kinda limiting yourself with the garage-sized AFV,Ferret's about the only option,I've seen a few Land Rover types at the local Army depot(shipped to be used as targets at Eglin AFB)but may have a few problems getting them regged here in US,due to safety and emissions.(highway folks are really starting to frown on surplus vehicles, especially those coming from overseas). I would REALLY like a GAZ/UAZ jeep!
There is something on the market called a "TOMCAR" that may be what you are looking for. I remember it being no much bigger than a Rhino or Mule that had up amor capabilites. Not sure if the up amor option was civilian friendly though.

The armored Tomcar is an interesting option. I'm at their mfg'ing facility 2-3 times a week. I think you'd be better served with an older, good truck, some AR500 plate, and a water jet to cut it to shape. Ferrets are certainly cool but parts are much easier to find parts for a more COTS type vehicle. |
Another possibility is the CVR(W) Fox.
AML-90 might be a bit long, courtesy of the 90mm. (Also available from South African build, known as the Eland) But there are many other variants, such as the AML-60 Or M3 VTT, all of which share much commonality of parts. With over 4,000 built, and widely exported, finding parts shouldn't be too hard. A third option might be a Daimler Dingo, if you can find one. If you want something tracked, consider an M3/M5 Stuart a Universal (Bren) Carrier or a Scorpion CVR(T) All of which are pretty common amongst private collectors and so finding parts/help shouldn't be hard. If you're willing to spend a bit of cash, and have a big-ish garage, the S-Tank (Strv-103) is suprisingly small, but incredibly cool. Problems are the 40+ton weight, and turbine engine. Unfortunately, numbers are limited. Not a hell of a lot were taken up before they were cut up for scrap, but they're out there. NTM |

I think I found what I want. Its called a Alvis Stalwart. It would be great for the Central Florida area.

Armored vehicles? Military equipment?
I know all about that! You want something that fits in a garage - and armored. You are limited. Ferret: 12 feet 7 inches long. 6 feet 3 inches wide. 6 feet 2 inches high. Weight: 8000 lbs. Max speed: 45 mph. Nice restored versions go for $20K+. $12K might get you a MV that needs work. Parts are not as easy to find as US vehicles. You could also go with a Jeep. M38's, M38A1's, M151's, Gamma Goats all fit in the garage. I own several MV's, so ask any questions. MV porn! My M38A1 under restoration My Half-track M38A1-D (not mine) Hummer (not mine) M38A1 (not mine) M38 (not mine) You could always buy a P-51 Mustang. That's me in the seat getting ready to take her up. I need to find pictures of my Sherman tank. Av. |

You want a real jaw dropper - look at the wing just above the .50's. Notice the streaks? Av. |

Dude I am dead serious, can I please come visit you for an afternoon. I am a military history and aviation nut. I would love to pick your brain and admire & document your mustang & vehicle collection in person. I can fly to Wisconsin in a day to day and a half. |

found a few things Im interested in but they are in the UK
anyone know about shipping vehicles over seas? |
From experience I would say you need to get eyes on or have someone you know and trust - I wouldnt take any dealers word unless Ive dealt with them previously or they are extremely well known and spotless rep (ie. Dunsfold, etc) . Just to much risk. Beyond that, most companies will have export experience, they can guide you. Basically, anything over 25 years is EPA/NHSTA/DOT exempt. Ensure you have good documentation of build or in-service date. Titling may be a little tricky. Wondering if armor needs special customs attn now - you can always hire an import broker - makes thing easier. Dont believe you'd need an RI - but things have tightened up recently so not entirely sure. Beyond that - Buy, meet US Ag requirements (have it steamed), make shipping arrangements (RO-RO is cheapest - maybe $1000-$1500 all fees - although sdepending on weight may get a surcharge - important - make sure it is insured enroute), pick it up at the port of your choice (Cheapest near you will likely be Southampton to Jacksonville (you're in luck) or Brunswick), pay US customs duty, get it home. An ARMED mustang? Yeouch... |

Does Mr. Greenhill know you are setting in his aircraft? |

Its not unless he bought it from the Greenhills. Dont think Chuck would part with it - he's owned it 10-15 years - caused me to think perhaps he had passed. Seeing what I heard US Tech sold the Dove for - well you could buy lots of M-38s. 'Course that plane was special. Luck Alac |

Chuck and Bev still own the Mustang - and Tim still works on it.
Chuck is a good guy and Bev drives me around the airport in her Jeep. Last time I asked, Chuck estimated the worth of the Mustang at a bit over $3 million. It is considered the most original Mustang left. I did a photo walk around about a year a go for an article I wrote on the Mustang. On the rear of the plane is the autograph of the man who flew it in WW2. He also owns a two-seater Mustang and several other planes. Tim owns a British reconnaissance plane. Av. |

Just got my new Military Vehicle magazine. I'll post up some ads tomorrow.

Ferret would be easier to find in top condition - spares likely easier and cheaper. Stollies have some issues. Drivetrain windup on the road (drive offroad occasionally/bump curbs), the drive-train is fairly complex and needs lots of attention (altho not all that much more than any Alvis 6x6), they may or may not be watertight (dont assume any example is), often the jets and swim gear has been removed - check if swimming is important, and there tends to be quite a bit of rust due to the nature of use. The Rolls B80 engines are decent - if somewhat expensive to fix. Spares arent entirely difficult to find (the B80 was used in quite a lot - Stolly specific spares can be more difficult) - at least a few years ago I'd see plenty of adverts for ex-MOD stuff - much is shared with the Saracen and Saladin. You often find Stollies cheap for a reason. They have much to recommend, but you have to stay on top of them. Definitely buy the best example you can find - not the easiest you can lay your hands on - it'll save you in the long run. Theres plenty of guys who own these in UK - really all over Europe. Do a search and mail a few of them - they'll be happy to answer questions. I'd also check the Alvis Fighting Vehicle Association. Dunno if the Stalwart Mail Group is still around - might start there. Its not armored - same with the SUMB or Pinzie. Whats the attraction to the SUMB? If you're going this route I'd stick with a Unimog or maybe the Pinzgauer. Luck Alac |

I'm down to 2 choices - BTR40 and Ferret
Not sure which to get but I'm leaning toward the Ferret |

try these guys. don't know anything about them
http://www.khakicorpsimports.com/ i suspect the oilfields kept a lot of ex-mil vehicles going. several around the area of texas andOK. i've seen command cars, gamma goats, half tracks, burma jeeps and lots of M-35s, M-135s/211plus the the bigger 5-&-10 tons. 'course, you could go scouting around the beaches: or if you're on a budget: |
That last one is funny! I tried http://www.khakicorpsimports.com/ but its a foreign company and want to try to get one stateside. |
All those are cute, but I want this www.armyjeeps.net/chieftian/british_chieftain.htm ($45,000)
I would build a garage for that. |
There are quite a few Cheiftans around.
$45K is a bit high for one. The one used in the Meg Ryan movie - I forgot the name - is done up as a M1, was used in a movie, and that one costs $40K. Do research BEFORE buying. There are plenty of MV's around. Don't just jump at the first one. My personal collection: Half-track Sherman Tank M38A1 Jeep - under restoration GPW MB Av. |
Will a Sherman Tank fit in the garage? Probably too high.
I'm trying to stay away from tracked vehicles because its probably more effort to maintain. |

Surlpus Hummer costs $20,000.
You can buy the up-armor kit for additional money. Av. |
How about just building a bigger garage??? Or do what lots of folks do,have a prefab garage out in the country??? Find some other folks who are into mil vehicles and go find a cheap lot/building.

I mean hummer with the same weapons |

I have my eye on that one and spoke with the owner. I know of another Ferret MK2/3 with turret for 1919 going for 10,000 and is functional which is a really good deal. Also, I'm waiting to start my new job before I buy anything. If its still there in October I'm going to buy it or one similar. I'd buy it now but just purchased a new home and am waiting to start my new job. Unfortunately, they wont finance or I'd buy it now.
you own a house like that with no job!? |
Have a job just didn't start it yet. Starts on the 13th. Plus, I married a rich women |
