take it to the manager. also make sure corporate hears about it.

!!
FO time Not a lot you can do, except raise nine kinds with the manager. Thats why I always scoot my numbers so they cant do that. Had it happen before; ETA: male or female waitress? |
I'd tell the manager to fix it quick or I would call the cops.
Wow, that's some big brass ones. I would be pissed, probably make sure she was fired. She could keep the tip though.

Just tell him to do a chargeback for the whole amount as fraudulent. The owner isn't going to play whodunit with everybody... he'll just fire all of them.
Problem solved. |
With a few rare exceptions, I strike out the tip line and tip cash.
If I use a cc to pay for a meal I always x out the tip area and leave the tip in cash. I think the servers like it better this way . .

I had a fucker do this to me in a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. He added USD to a bill that was Kenyan Shilling...so instead of 250KS for a beer at the pool, about $3, I was charged $250. Visa squared it away as soon as I mentioned it. Seems it happens all the time. Now when overseas I either pay in cash or make sure that it's absolutely clear what currency the bill is in.
Contact your CC company. They'll square this away and take care of the LE aspect as well. |

With a few rare exceptions, I strike out the tip line and tip cash. I saw my friend do this at Outback. He draws a small box in the tip line writes 0.00 then Xs it out. He said that same Outback added in an $18.00 tip after he left a $20 cash tip on the table. |

TAG for AAR.
I often write CASH and tip in cash, but when I don't I'd be furious about something like that. The $6.24 tip on a $41.28 bill is almost exactly 15%, so it's not like the waitron had any real reason to feel slighted. |
Quoted: well your friend was short of 15% by $.32, that'll teach him Incorrect. Tip is computed on pre-tax amount. |
You had to pick up a copy for him? He should have the original showing the correct amount and fax it to the cc company. CW |

And this is why I always pay with cash when I go eat out... Lately there's a trend to "round off" the change. I've seen everthing from 70 or 80 cents to several dollars. It's theft and I don't let them get away that crap. I have also had CC receipts brought to me with a tip filled in before I signed off - those get struck out and a zero added. That's bullshit and the service generally sucks anyway. |

My brother had this happen once. Went right back to the restuarant and the waitress was immediately fired.

My parents went to a Tony Roma's once (now out of business, at least here). Mom checked the receipt the next day, and saw an extra $300 on the CC charge! When she called the restaurant, the manger told her that they had a dine and dash, and since they couldn't close out the system with money outstanding, they had to charge it to someone's CC. She was the lucky recipient. When she asked why he couldn't show it as a cash and account for it later, he didn't have an answer. He offered to refund the $300 in GIFT CERTIFICATES! She told him to get bent, called the CC company, had the charges reversed, called corporate, and IIRC the manager got canned over it.
OP, sorry to hear the wait staff in question tried to take advantage of your buddy, but at least he caught it. |

bastards!
in the DFW area, the waiters have their own USB card readers clipped to their belt loops under their aprons. They scan in your card and download it to their PC later and sell that info. Pay cash or check anytime you have to give the payment to someone and the transaction does not happen right there. |
I'd go back, find the server, ask her/him get me the manager and have a nice talk then demand a full refund.
good on him for noticing it. as mentioned in other posts, your friend needs to take this directly to corporate. |

Glad he got fired. |

With a few rare exceptions, I strike out the tip line and tip cash. This is EXACTLY what I do. Gives them the opportunity to do what they want with the cash, and eliminates the possibility of them writing in a number. |

I'd raise hell and do everything in my power to make sure that the waitress was unemployed. Fuckin' thief...
I usually write on the reciept so big that they cant fit anything else
As a server, ALWAYS scratch and black out the tip line and write the original total, scratch your credit card number off the receipt, and tip in cash. I've seen a lot of servers get canned over adding tips onto credit card slips. Also, most servers don't report cash tips to the IRS so they don't get taxed and have the money right away.

call the cops and the manager. There is more to this than just gettinbg money back. I garantee that this thieving cunt has done this before and intends to do it again. My parents caught some asshole doing that shit at thier favorite restraunt. That asshole is now in prison for commiting tens of thousands worth of credit card fraud over a couple years.

Quoted: With a few rare exceptions, I strike out the tip line and tip cash. This is my usual method, but on the days I don't have any cash in pocket I write it like this: ––––––––$4.00 With the line and the $ sign, they aren't screwing me. Live and learn I guess. At least you got him the receipt, I have a feeling someone will be out of a job.

She lost her job over $10. No, this bitch has pretty likely been doing it for a while. She almost tripled her tip. Its not like changing a 6 to an 8. |
