The American Century just ended. This was the phrase coined by Henry Luce, which so aptly described America as the modern-day colossus, more powerful than any nation had ever been. Wednesday night, President Obama said that power had reached its limit. He was bringing 10,000 troops home from Afghanistan. The war was not finished, but we are.
“America, it is time to focus on nation building at home,” the president said. There it was, the theme of the speech. We had done what we could in Afghanistan, and there was, of course, more to do. But the purse was empty and the nation was tired –– this is me, not Obama, talking, but he said much the same thing. “We must be as pragmatic as we are passionate; as strategic as we are resolute,” Obama said. In other words, we are going to pick our fights more carefully, and when we do, we can use the new weaponry of drones and the units of SEALs and such. No need for massive armies anymore. From the president’s mouth to God’s ear, I would add. Not if we can help it..... |

"More powerful than any nation has ever been" does not mean that it is a nation capable of doing all things at all times. This is still the American Century. There is no one even close to us in terms of economic power, military power or international charity. Yes, we have our problems. But don't let the doom and gloom get to you. In my opinion, the President is making the right call. We did what we went to Afghanistan to do - we didn't go there to build a nation. It's time for us to go home and let the Afghans step up to the plate. If they choose not to - again - that is their choice. You can lead a horse to water, but you shouldn't have to stick your head up its ass and suck to make it drink. We have some SERIOUS problems at home. You want those soldiers at home - trust me. |

That's what he wants to the Army specifically and the Military as a whole. |

It will take more than phony patriotism to con the American people into supporting a permanent military occupation of multiple hostile Muslim nations. In this specific area, I wholeheartedly support Obama.
Team America World Police has been a total and complete failure, and neocons are freaking out that their bullshit fear mongering isn't going to work any longer. |

Yet that idiot is keeping us involved in Libya as well as hearing rumblings about getting more involved in Yemen |

So he's saying we should stop doing this because we can't afford it. Other things we can't afford are fine though.

I recall reading a story in a retirement magazine (military) years ago that went something like this: "The best gauge for when the coming of the next war would be is how fast the military is disbanded". I want to say it was Will Rogers but I can't find the article... |
|
If we are not allowed to fight like we are supposed to win it, I'd just as soon bring them home. The Soldiers are capable, the politicians are not.
|

I support bringing the troops home but for the right reasons. Doesn't it seem too coincidental that our guys are coming home, but Hussein is ignoring the Generals on the ground? Hussein is trying to score points using our guys as pawns. What happens to the guys left behind when they have fewer numbers on the ground and less support?
|
|
It's OK, we'll get new direction from the next president along with a republican house and a republican senate.
If you guys ain't excited about those prospects, you need to STFB. |

We've wasted enough money and american lives trying to civilize that country. It's time to cut our losses and be done with it. We have better things to do.

No need for massive Armies?????? History will prove him wrong. American history if nothing else. We have historically drawn down our forces and then when a threat materializes (imagine that) we have to suddenly build up our forces at great expense. We have been lucky to have the time to do this. We may not be so fortunate in the future. History has also shown that threats can appear quickly on the horizon. Insignificant countries today could be a military power in just a few years if their leadership is competent. AkA, Germany in the 30s, Japan in the late 19th century, etc. |

You are closer to the truth than many people will admit. I don't look at it as though we are "declining," just that we are ceasing to do things and going places we should never have gone in the first place. |

I agree with this. +1 I hear a lot of politicians say we need to stay "until the job is done", except that job keeps changing and whenever we make progress in one area we lose ground somewhere else, so it's always 1 or 2 years more. The job will never BE done, as the empires who came before us can attest. Anything we build the Afghans will tear down within a year of us leaving, so we should leave them to themselves. |

“America, it is time to focus on nation building at home,” the president said. It's long past time to be focused on our own issues. We should bring everyone home today, and that's only because we cannot go back in time and do it seven or eight years ago. The only problem I have with Obama's move here is that he's calculating that he can gain votes by "bringing the troops home", yet still leave enough there so that if he loses in '12, the next President is faced with the inevitable "defeat", or takes the hit for another "surge". The great majority of Americans stopped caring about Afghanistan. It's time for politicians to stop simpering and wringing their hands about what's going to happen there. Let the UN step in with European and Asian "peacekeepers", funded by European and Asian taxpayers. We need to pry all of those suckling on the teat of the American taxpayer off. |
|
We need to get back to the way Reagan did it, encouraging backwards ass insane fucks to kill each other with abandon any chance we get.
|
|
Obama has been lost since day one of his presidency. He has had surrender as part of his plan all along. Now the insurgents will step up their attacks to further drive home the need to depart. Afghanistan will not be the better for us having been there thanks to this loser quitting before the job is done.
|
|
He's recalling the surge increase troops, 30,000 troops. That's it.
The news estimated 70,000 to 90,000 that will be staying until late 2014 with this new plan. Hardly a withdrawal huh? He's just campaigning and talking down America again. |

Listening to the Generals this morning it struck me, they ALWAYS oppose a drawdown and call for additional time. They, like so many other government workers bristle at any talk of downsizing. They have all their expensive toys and a big sandbox to play with them in. Hell, I'd wanna keep playing too, but their time has come to pass. It's time for the Afgans to stand on their own two feet. we can't hold their hand forever. |

Front page of the newspaper I saw this morning was saying he was planning this by Oct 2012- I'm sure that date is just a coincidence.

I caught about two minutes of that putrid pile of bullshit.
Absolutely unfuckingbelieveable. The tone, the content, the mannerisms, the works. ALL of it was bullshit. I wonder if it will go down as his malaise speech a la Carter.... |

Wow, I read the comments at the bottom of that article and thought there were some ignorant fucks there. Then I read some of the comments here.
Yes, we should always fight our wars based on the opinion of the average stupid slackjawed asshole man in the street. "When the going gets tough, run away" is as fine a policy as I have ever heard. We killed Osama so the war is over, brilliant strategic analysis. Mark my words, Iraq isn't much of a threat because when we ran away we left behind the Shiites and Sunnis who are too busy slaughtering each other to be a threat to us. This is not the case in Afghanistan. When we run away there, the Taliban will sweep Karzai away with little to no prob as the forces we leave behind will switch sides in that old Afghan tradition of siding with the stronger side. The Taliban will take some time to reconsolidate and rebuild, possibly leaving the northern tribes alone. After that, Al Qaeda will have a new base of operations with nice air conditioned buildings, comfortable beds, inside shitters and showers, bright shiny new weapons to plan their attacks on the West. And history will repeat itself. Except, of course, a nuclear Pakistan, rapidly moving towards Islamofascism will be their open and willing ally and will introduce a whole new level of hilarity to the world terrorism game. Spend your Peace Dividend well, assholes. |

This, like many of the politically motivated actions of this narcissistic, ego maniac is nothing but a calculated effort to put him in a better position for the 2012 election. It has nothing to do with helping America on the road to economic recovery, or concern for our deployed military, or anything else he as a leader should be concerned with. It is all about increasing his chance at a second term in office.
