Watching 'Band of Brothers' I noticed they use a different phonetic alphabet then today. Is it the same one that police use? Also, when did they change it?

In the Marines, the unit names are very staight forward. 1st/2nd/4rd/4th Marine Division, with Regts/BN/Co/Plts under them. ie 'Alpha' Co/1st Bn/1st Marine Reg/1st Marine Div....pretty simple.

How are the unit numbers broken out logically in the Army? Was there ever a 102nd Airborne Div? or 100th ABN? Is there a rhyme or reason to it?

Think that the phonetic alfabet changed in the 1950's (When, exactly, I dont know) due to NATO standardization.

Is "Lima" pronounced with a long "e" or long "i"?  If I'm going to learn it I want
the pronunciation correct.....

Lima is Lee-mah, and Quebec is Key-beck. Those are the two that trip people up most.

I am not aware why they kept changing the phonetic alphabet. I belive the switch from "Old Military Style" the the version is current use was to have a phonetic alphabet that was uniform all across NATO.

I'll see if I an confirm that.

In for 'I'?  Wouldn't that be a tad confusing?

I vote for the following changes:  :-)

Aye
Cay
Double-U
Eye
For
GI
I
Jose
Kane
Qatar
Sea
Xylophone

Then sit back and watch the hilarity ensue....

Chuck,

Thanks for the great explanation...even a Marine can understand it =)

Is WWI the farthest USA units can trace their unit history?

"CSA service is considered to be US Army service and CSA earned battle honors accrue to current units. These are all ARNG units in the states of the late Confederacy (to my knowledge)."

ummmm....time for some PC cleansing!  Can't have the CSA credited for anything.   Wonder when that will happen?  I hope never.

Oldest unit in the Army is a company (maybe battery) in MAARNG which has lineage to the early 1600s.
