First they were going to require warrants. Now they're considering giving subpoena power to al least a dozen alphabet agencies. Sheriffs and DA's propose and approve.

Big flip flop here. Will this require House approval?

There is nothing private about email. Don't put anything in an email you would be afraid for the whole world to see.

The ACLU will solve this problem

They're ratcheting down the control grid.

It's going to be fun when they start giving orders that piss people off and using the grid to enforce them.

Email will never be secure until all email is sent encrypted. People are too lazy to make that happen.

This bill has to do with them wanting to access stored data guys, this is different than plaintext network communication. This is a much bigger deal.

Looking at Tor as a solution is almost as funny as using "email" "privacy" and "expected" in the same sentence

The .gov is just codifying what its been doing all along. Look at all the FBI PATRIOT Act violations, and how not a thing was done about it.

What email privacy? or more like the fixed one above.. what privacy?

Americans dont care so there will be absolutely no privacy.. and no recognizable country soon enough, its boiling faster and still nobody jumps.

Yes. But don't fuck up and use the same pass-phrase for multiple accounts or any of the myriad of other ways to expose yourself.

A recent (excellent as usual) blog post about this with a bunch of good quotes and quality links here:

This. There is no such thing, especially when dealing with the gov.

It needs to become standard in ALL email transactions.

Shit, every PACKET needs to be encrypted.

Yep, it needs to be built in. I set up Thunderbird with OpenPGP but I never get to use it because nobody I email uses it. In general, people will pick the laziest option with the worst security possible. It would be much better if it was standard, but people would complain.

Even with encryption, if a high enough office wants to read it, it will.

If a high enough office wants it, they'll just do some rubber-hose cryptanalysis on you and get the key.

I think what this article was saying was now (with the proposals discussed in the article) , without any real effort or help, certain agencies (IRS) can subpoena your IP for your e-mail......no warrant (no judge, no court) , no probably cause, no real technology (no NSA or FBI), just laws that purport to pass Constitutional muster.

Quite a turn around from Leahy's original position.
