I went to survival discussion earlier and clicked on a thread, it started downloading all sorts of crap, spent the last three hours getting rid of it, restoring, etc.
Went back after all that, clicked again just on SD and it started up, I shut down hard. Restarted and it gave me a threat alert.

Or don't buy a new computer and learn how to use a gnu/linux distro.

Or learn how to avoid virii on Windows.

True, but then you've got a $1500 boat anchor.

Well I think I got a virus here on Arfcom as well now that we are talking about it. Beware of what you click on even on Arfcom.

Whatever I got blue screened my laptops and put trojans on it. My computer is toast. When I tried to install a new windows system it blue screened as well. So I may need a new HD.

How hard is it to learn that? I toyed with the idea, but don't want to get in over my head.

FWIW I run Kaspersky interwebz security.

I got one on a laptop at work yesterday that was called " Total Security ". It was a POS spyware type that claimed I had all kinds of bad things happening & to give a credit card # to activate the program to save me.

It took over the desktop with its BS message, disabled the control panel & prevented any cleaning tools I downloaded from running ( like PC doctor, Trend housecall, etc. . It was hard to get rid of, only program running was a radio station feed when it came in.

Vundo is a big vector for this type of malware.

Download Malwarebytes and run it. My coworker got this on his work machine, it wasn't pretty.

I recently had fun with something similar. I just booted from the cd drive and reformatted and started over.

Whatever I had would not let me download malwarebytes but I later learned they have some hidden ways to download that so the virus does not know what you are doing.

I did find some of the ads amusing, it changes ads on sites like yahoo and what not.

Wow...it only took two posts.

Guess what? I NEVER have virus problems. Ever.

And the only reason there aren't as many viruses for Macs is because nobody bothers writing them for it, since they are such a tiny market share. But yeah, I'm sure OSX is impervious to viruses. Go Apple!

Do not hit the red X to close the window. Use control+alt+del. to close each window. That way you don't accidentally download the virus.

Get a distro like Ubuntu.

So easy a caveman could do it.

I'm running Slackware 13 right now, but it's one of the more hard core distributions.

ETA:

I think the new cool thing with the desktop linux distros is that you boot off the CD into a desktop.

You can play around with some of the programs and stuff and not do anything permanent to your system and then if you decide you like it, you can install it from right there.

If you've used OSX before, you'll find that underneath the graphical stuff it's very similar. There is no C: drive it's all done from a tree hierarchy. / is the main folder. /bin stores some basic programs that you probably wont ever use until you start toying around with the terminal. /usr/bin holds pretty much every other program. /home/[your name] holds all of your personal files.

You can shrink your windows partition and install linux in the free space and then dual boot. If you need to use windows, just restart and select windows at the boot menu.
