The old school M16 looked awesome. I mean, today's M4 and M16 look awesome today, but I really like that old space age look of the M16.

I really want to build a retro AR.

They used to be so ugly to me, but now I would trade my only m4 for the sp1 style AR. They are beautiful to me regarding both aesthetics and functionality.

If you saved ONE dollar a week, you would have had enough dollars to put in a little stack and deposit in the bank. You could then go to the arfstore and buy a membership with your little pile of one dollar bills saved up over the last 5 months.

It's been a while since you've been able to embed youtube videos... I'm about to buy you a membership ya cheapskate.

Doggammit!

Now I have to reset my timer! If I can go one full month without someone bashing another forum member about not having a "Paid" membership I will pay mine!

So far I have not been successful !

There are many different reasons why members don't "Buy" official memberships. Y'all need to respect that. Rarely does it have anything to do with being a cheapskate!

Back in those days I used to see genuine green prototype furniture sets for sale at gun shows - bright leaf green and dull olive drab.  These were the triangular handguards, non-trapdoor buttstocks, plain pistol grips.  They always had collector prices on them and were out of my range.

I finally got olive green furniture on my SP1 by using Rock River stuff.  Them round handguards are almost too new-fanglety for me.

Us retroheads are beyond building repos of 601s, 602s etc.  Many of us now are into building repros of the original prototypes.

Like this from John Thomas:

I had one like those pictured here and gave it to a friend of mine who loves guns as a retirement gift.  The only changes I made was to put in all new springs and gas rings.  Otherwise it is like it was decades ago.

He still has it and treats it like a gift from God.

It is in good hands and he'll pass it down to his sons.

My AR's nowadays are the new ones.  Oldest is a Colt rifle about 15 years old.

Do the charging handles on those early prototypes reciprocate?

Mine:

For those who have never shot them, the main thing you immediately note is just how light they are.  It's the rifle you want to tote around.  The only thing that truly sucks is the un-tapered A1 handguard retainer.
