Yeah its England but not unrealistic to think it will be coming to our favorite US urban areas like NYC, Chicago, etc in the future. Of course firearms are banned from such areas anyway. I still found it an interesting read. One day here they will want to be watching.

Device may be able to detect guns
Software developed by scientists in Leics may help police reduce gun crime.
It aims to help CCTV operators identify the characteristics common with criminals carrying weapons.

The project, called Medusa, has been undertaken by a team at Loughborough University in conjunction with four other universities.

There were almost 11,000 firearms offences recorded in England and Wales between 2004 and 2005 - an increase of 6% from the previous year.

Associated behaviour

Researchers will examine genuine CCTV footage of people carrying concealed firearms in order to identify the behaviour of criminals just before they commit a gun-associated crime.

The system will pick up aspects such as body stance and shape, movement or eye contact with cameras.

Using this information the team hope the software will be able to scan incoming CCTV pictures to detect behaviour associated with gun crime.

They will work with colleagues from Kingston, Brighton, Liverpool and Sunderland universities.

Prof Alastair Gale, who is leading the project, said: "We hope that what the computer software will do is reduce that tendency for false positive detection where somebody is stopped and searched and it turns out they are actually an innocent person."

If that's true, I doubt someone that's carrying lawfully would exhibit the same behavior as someone about to use a gun in a crime.

This describes anybody who is interested in security. If you work with CCTV at work, you're naturally going to look for and eyeball security cameras anywhere. Are they going to start trying to pick up security guards for precrime?

I would be curious to know whether or not they look any different than criminals who are about to commit a 'knife-associated crime' -

Or a 'broken beer bottle-associated crime' -

Or a 'really wicked sucker-punch-to-the-jaw-associated crime' -

Or a 'pointy-finger-stuck-inside-my-jacket-pocket-so-that-it-sort-of-looks-like-a-gun-associated crime' -
