What is this going to do that the T-38 won't do?

Was it already chosen or is it flying off against something?

The T-38 is one of the most elegant planes ever built but there's no getting around that the youngest ones are 45 years old.
The big question for is if it can beat the M-346 and T-50 on price really.

The Northrop contender looks, other than the forward fuselage chine, looks like it's from the 60s and I kinda like that.

It will be interesting to see if the Boeing get this contract after the KC tanker refuel debacle.

I still think Northrup will probably come out with the TX contract in the end.

From what I've heard the Air Force isn't interested in a "clean sheet" design. More so just an modern update to the existing design with emphasis on saving costs.

Grumman/Composites T-X submission.

There is  huge global market  potential for a light fighter aircraft as the geriatric MiG-21s,Skyhawks,Hawk 66s,F-5s...need replacing with things like Rafales and Gripens way too clostly. Of course the problem is already in production aircraft like the FA-50 really aren't cheap and these will likely be more. No matter the airframe, shit's expensive yo.

I can see the avionics and comm systems needed on a new jet being more expensive than the airframe.

Cute little bugger. I hope it wins, we need new trainers as well, and this would be perfect.

A formal competition has not been started.  The Air Force has been talking to all of the players, so everyone thinks they know how the requirements will look.  If the Air Force pulls a Lucy and yanks the football, there are going to be some pissed off companies.

There are three or four airplanes proposed for the competition.  The Textron-Airland airplane is probably out as it is not supersonic.  The Raytheon airplane is an Italian M-346 begat from a Russian Yak AEM-130; probably hail mary.  LM is proposing an Americanized version of the Korean TA-50.

The T-X competition will be more than just an airplane, it is the complete training package.  But airplanes are way sexier than three ring binders or ipads, or procedures trainers and simulators.

I think the competition will come down to the Boeing SAAB team and the NG/BAE/L-3 team.  Maybe LM if their cost numbers are more bullshit than usual.

Eventually.  I'm not going to discuss details about the engineering.  But all y'all should admire that beautiful NLG door.

The Boeing SAAB airplane will also be marketed as a light weight fighter.  So there's your A-10 replacement!

The narrow, F 16 style MLG is an 'interesting' choice for a trainer.

Could be worse. Could be inline like a U-2.

The once proposed stripped down Gripen trainer was a neat idea.
