What motivates a prisoner to do something like this? I'm trying to see the upside from their point of view on this. Prison cred?

Execute both behind the prison in front of the whole yard of inmates. They'll get the picture.
Why in the world is that guard in a cell block of inmates like that with all of them fuckers walking around!?! |

Looked like the CO had some boxing background, based on how he moved and threw hands while backing up and moving laterally. Didn't help him much against an edged weapon.
Guess it doesn't much matter who you are or what your background is. If a guy deploys a knife on you by surprise, you're getting cut up. |

So, I realize these probably aren't particularly reasonable people... but nearly all human beings have an innate understanding of cause and effect.
What, precisely, were they expecting to get out of this? I'd get it if they thought they'd get to escape, but this seemed somewhat ill fated. |

They have the cognitive ability to get dressed, bath, whatever else they're allowed to do. I presume, as humans, they're able to at least reason the response to their actions. This didn't really gain them anything. And prison cred? Stabbing a guard gets them exactly what? Do other prisoners really say "wow, you ambushed a guard and got beat up. That's very impressive of you!" |

In my many years in corrections I have seen lots of assaults, and I can tell you one thing for sure
about the reasoning behind them. There is no good answer, and sometime the answer is there is no reason. Sometimes the reason is beyond comprehension to "normal" people like us that use our brains for reasoning, and critical thinking. I have been threatened for everything under the sun never assaulted, but I'm sure if I wait long enough it will happen eventually. 17 years, and I have seen assaults on staff for as little as telling an inmate what to do (completely professionally and by policy) to looking at some psych patient the wrong way on the wrong day at the wrong time to the other end of the spectrum where it involved the battle of a couple hard headed idiots officers, and inmates included. No easy answer. |
