I was at my 20 year reunion this weekend and one of my classmates is an air traffic controller. She works the airspace over the 9 midwest states. She was working on 9/11 and talked to Airforce One. As she was talking to Airforce one on its way to the Nebraska air base, she received comunications from one or more F16s out of the AFB in Nebraska. They were targeting the "unknown" aircraft that was headed toward them. My classmate informed them of the identity of their target and Airforce One continued to its destination. So do you think the events of 9/11 were a little chaotic or what? The Airforce personnel in Nebraska obviously didn't know they were getting a special visitor.

She should have told them it was a commercial airliner that wasn't responding to radio and had its transponder set to the "hijack" frequency. That would have been pretty funny, Air Force One getting shot down by a US fighter.

Don't know what type of planes might be at the base in Lincoln NE. There are no fighters from Offut AFB in Omaha. Thier fighter wing is 185th tactical in Sioux City, IA. That is where the F16s that escorted Air Force 1 to Omaha came from. I think Airforce 1 escorted by F16s would not be targeted long by other F16s.

Actually with its classified offense & classified defense, I will go out on a limb and guess she may not be as easy as any other 747, cause she aint no other 747.... Those who know wont say & those who say dont know....

The F16 might have been out of another base. She didn't get into details on them, just that they did not know that AF1 was on it's way.

Uh, wouldn't the IFF have told the fighter pilots that AF1 was a friendly? Maybe things were just a little bit tense that day. Chris Edited because I can't write a coherent sentence.

But wouldn't any airliner be considered a friendly on a normal day and a threat on 9/11?
