Sure, the unlimited plan is appealing. However, in time past, you could get a phone for maybe 200 dollars with 2 year contract...2 GB data.. That's not a big deal since most places I go my phone automatically goes to wifi.

So checking up on the unlimited data......you have to buy your phone outright or make monthly payments which total more than buying outright.....pay more per phone now.....

I don't know if the contract is still required or not....but for us...not a good deal....

Monthly payments total the full phone price exactly

This, financing is 0%.

You still pay the device access fee, and the plan data, along with the device payment.

The data plans seem luring until you as the other monthly costs in, then it's absurd.

LOL, I've been buying my phone out right for the last 6 years because it has allowed me to keep my unlimited data plan.  Guess what, when you actually pay the full price of the phone directly you start to realize you don't need the newest $600 phone, instead the one year old model that now sells for $300 is perfectly fine.  There is no contract if you have a plan where you buy your phone outright because they use the 2 year contract to make sure they get the amount they subsidized back.

I have a buddy who buys a new phone every 12-16 months, I just buy his phone from him. So now I have a i6 32gb that does just fine for me, and I also keep my truly unlimited data plan. I haven't had a contract in 6 years or more.

I have my unlimited plan from when they "gave" you a phone for "free".

The phone payment was rolled into the monthly payment. Years and many phones later, my payment is more than it was before.  I wish they would have had a lower payment and made me buy my phones back then.

Between the wife and I, I've paid for at least a half dozen phones since we got the "free" ones.

When I got my S7 I switched to their new plan.  My bill went down and my data went up.  Even with paying monthly payments on the phone.  No contract.

eBay is also a good source for new or slightly used phones.  That is generally where I go.  You can even get them pre-rooted if you like.  My last phone I waited until a promotion and bought a 2 year old model.  If it receives calls, texts, and can browse the internet then it works.  I never understood the dick measuring contest on who has the latest and greatest phone.

Verizon is the only choice where I live.  I pay for 4 lines and 4 gigs.  We stay under 4 gigs and it is about $150 per month.  If we switch to unlimited data the bill jumps way over $200.  It's too much as it is.  But don't really see any other option.  I don't need unlimited data.  It's on wifi most of the time anyway.

Still using my 6plus from over 2 years ago and it works fine.  Wife still uses an iPhone 5.  Son is paying off an iPhone 6s.

I am just going to buy older gen phones and save a little money.

I have to wonder if their new Unlimited plan isn't some type of trick.  My unlimited data with 750 minutes of talk and text is billed around $130 a month.  Yet the new unlimited everything plan is only $80 for one line.  Verizon also previously kicked people off the unlimited data plan for using too much data.  They have never been friendly towards unlimited data users but now they want to offer it for $50 cheaper?  Call me skeptical.

ETA, I found the fine print.  With the new plan they will "prioritize data packets".  Meaning they will slow down your speed if you are using too much data.   Also when it comes to hotspots or tethering if you go over 10gb they will drop you to 3G speed.

I had Verizon from 2006-2008, I ditched them for Sprint and haven't regretted it for a second.

I've had unlimited everything from day one, and while the service isn't quite as good as Verizon, it's more than adequate the vast majority of the time.

I'm afraid of buying one like that. I'm afraid someone will send me a brick or a non-compatible phone. My buddy also has Verizon so I know it will work. Last time I just swapped SIM cards and was immediately good to go.

I agree.  If you have a friend selling one and know how it was taken care that is the better way to go.  eBay does protect the buyers though and there are businesses that do nothing but buy used phones, upgrade them, test them, and resell them.  Someone with 30,000+ positive feedbacks and selling all types of phones is going to be good to go and should have at least a 30 day warranty.

I've bought three phones from Ebay and all of them have been better than described.

Probably what I am going to do.  I don't need the latest.  Just one that works well.

It doesn't seem like the unlimited plan is that great of a deal if you don't use a ton of data. I'm still on one of the older plans w/ 10gb. I get a 20% discount for my employer. My bill would go up by $75/month to swap. I rarely hit my 10gb limit. Not going to bother. Cheaper for me to buy extra GB at $15 when I occasionally need more. I'm on WIFI if I'm at home or work.

Well, I seem to be in the minority here.  My wife and I have smartphones, and we also had a line (dumbphone) for my mom.  We checked into this plan last night, and once my wife's phone falls out of the upgrade period (June), we will be paying $30 less a month total for 4 smartphones.  Got my son a phone with 22 gb of data for less money per month.  I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop, but right now I'm happy.

This...but I still buy quite a few phones.  The key is to flip them before they lose a boat load of value.  Swappa is my friend.  Have had two UDP's w/ VZW since they existed.

All the carriers went to non subsidized phone pricing, regardless of unlimited.
