I am currently on a Verizon plan for my Droid2, I signed the contract in late 2010 so I have the "unlimited" data plan. I noticed that once I got above around 500MB of data usage, the data speeds were CRAWLING. I noticed today that my 3G data was flying. I was able to get onto web sites very quickly, etc... and then I recall that I just started the next monthly billing cycle so my data usage went back to 0 a few days ago. I suspect they are throttling/limiting data speeds on unlimited users, which I kind of knew about from news articles, but I didn't realize they'd do it at such a low usage rate (500MB or so)

Has anyone experienced something similar? I figured they'd give us normal 3G speeds up to 2GB and then start throttling. 500MB or less is ridiculous. I might as well tell them to give me the 2GB plan instead.

yeah. It gets so bad that I can barely listen to pandora. Last month I couldn't even check my email or get mint to update my bank accounts.

Nope, I am at 800MB and no throttling here.

They are cracking down on non-paying tether users though.

Using speedtest.net, my current speeds are 1.4 Mbps down and 0.23 Mbps upstream. The fastest I have ever gotten was 2 Mbps downstream. The usual speeds I get are 0.1-0.5 Mbps downstream, which is crawling in today's standards.

Is there a way to tether wirelessly without paying as a hotspot?

with a rooted phone, easily. I think there are a few apps that let you do it for non-rooted though

If you're not tethering what's your data usage at the time they start throttling?  I typically use between 2 and 3 gigs and so far I've never been throttled.

If you're tethering more than just occasionally, then do us all a favor and buy a tethering account.

Yes, but you will likely get shut down and ETF'd out of your contract.

If you need it, buy a tethering plan. I get it when I know I am going to Vegas or on the road, as most of those places charge for Wifi now, and it is cheaper to pay VZW.

This. Tether abusers on all carriers have gotten us these bullshit caps and tether plans.

in one of my techie emails there was an aritcle discussing this topic and it seems that all of the carriers are starting to 'throttle' the access speeds of their top 3%.

As I recall from the artivle, the definition of the top 3% and the details around what triggered the throttling of data speeds was vague or non-existent. In my opinion the net effect is to get the grandfathered unlimited data users to whatever new data pyramid the carrier is pushing this week.

I'm grandfathered for unlimited data and after seeing that article and just seeing the general trend I suppose I'll bite the bullet and move myself to a data plan that will at least allow me to do a personal hot-spot. I don't use more than 4GB of data a month anyway and I might as well be able to surf while on my iPad when a public wifi is not available.

I don't tether.  I have tethered via USB cord using PDANet a few times.

My usage is less than 2 gig a month, but I'm on Sprint, so I could (in theory) use a hundred million billion trillion gigabytes per month...however, that would probably warrant a call from Sprint (and maybe homeland security) asking me why I am using so much damn bandwidth.

Just shy of 2gb here and not throttling atm. I have 6 days left for this billing cycle to go. Honestly that's a bit low for me this month.

I also tethered with it while on vacation last week. Used maybe 250mb all week while tethered a few times. First time I tethered in months. Idiots tethering and using it as their main connection and torrenting all over the place is what got us into this mess.

I have an Iphone 4 jailbroken and use MyWi to tether wirelessly every once in a while and it works great. I know Android has a few options as well. I've yet to exceed 1.2 GB and am usually considerably under 1 GB by the end of the billing cycle so I doubt Verizon will really care.

They won't. It is the "IT'S MAH BANDWIDTH TUBEZ BRO!! I PAID FOR UNLIMITED!!!" that are getting shut down.

I agree with your points and am at just about the same data usage you are. 1.6 G with a couple weeks left. Maybe I just had a network hiccup.

Check with Mobile Stream / Easy Tether. they support tethering apps for most Droid phones. The free version of ET blocks Gmail Netflix, and some other Https. The full version is 9.99 and is unlimited with no blocks. I use my phone 90% as internet connection device. ( using it right now ).http://www.mobile-stream.com/

Some people just can't understand that by abusing the shared bandwidth on the network causes carriers to make decisions such as capping, data speed throttling.  I witnessed an argument the other day where some guy claimed that because he was throttled and other people were throttled, there were more of them on the system and because there were more of them on the system it was causing congestion.  I tried to explain that 20 people downloading a 2GB file at full speed uses much more bandwidth than 20 people downloading a 2GB file with dial up to DSL speeds.  Of course he thought I was wrong.  Spectrum is a limited commodity.

You can wire tether android without root and paying for applications.

I'm with Sprint. I've tried the built in tethering feature in the WiFi and network connection setting menu on my HTC EVO maybe Sprint blocks it as I could never get it to work. I was using PDAnet app but didn't like how some days it was hit or miss and had to uninstall the app and then reinstall to get it to work. I found the Easy Tether app works the best for me.

Bottom line: Don't advertise "unlimited", then place limits on it.

I don't tether at all and I only use my Droid2 for downloading apps, checking stuff on the web, watching a few videos here and there, and listening to Pandora infrequently... my average monthly usage is about 1GB, maybe at most 1.5GB

The 3G sucks as it is and it makes me mad that they'd want to restrict my download speeds even more. It makes me mad enough to want to switch at times.

Bullshit monetization of something you already use is bigger bullshit.

A packet is a packet is a packet when it comes to data transmission.  To pay double for a service I already pay for, is well........fucking stupid and I won't do it.

I also don't tether very often, as it is only an emergency use item.

VZW just wants to be able to charge you $30 for NOTHING extra that you don't already get.  It is just like being taxed on your income, and then taxed a 2nd time for good measure, but % based on the original sum not the post-tax amount.

Furthermore, there are (as evinced by this thread) options to tether wired and not pay the extra expense of WIRELESS tether...........so it's really not about the bandwidth..............hmmmm

I tether, I average 4GB a month, I have no other internet at my house. If there's a big file or torrent I want to download I'll bookmark it and download it when I'm somewhere with WIFI, but all my general browsing is done thru my phone.
