Socialism at it finest

Seven major access points in the capital of 5.5 million people are now run by soldiers or police, who also took total control of all public and private water trucks.

Theoretically, water in the socialist nation is subsidized, costing pennies a month. But the pipes in Caracas haven’t been renewed in three decades and Bausson said that repair crews have dwindled to about 40 from 400 back when he was in charge. Most pumps that bring water from reservoirs outside Caracas are only partly working. Two auxiliary dams, meant to guarantee supply for 15 days in emergencies, are critically low or empty.

Hidrocapital sometimes entirely cuts service for as long as 48 hours. Most people in Caracas get 30 minutes of water mornings and nights, igniting a mad rush to leave work or social gatherings to shower, wash and clean.
View Quote
Military officers have begun commandeering trucks, according to a dozen water providers in Caracas. Drivers are forced to go wherever officers tell them without the expectation of pay. Sometimes they’re led to government buildings, others to military residences or private homes.

The Latin American Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank together loaned Venezuela more than half a billion dollars in the past 10 years for water projects....None of it helped.

Kariandre Rincon, a press official for Venezuela’s Defense Ministry, declined to comment on the military’s recent encroachment on the country’s water resources and trucks.

They didn't apply socialism correctly.

When we do it, it will work just fine.

No way!  That has never happened to communist countries.

I still remember talking to a nice couple from there when on vacation at a nice resort.  I asked about the Chavez thing and they were emphatic they were leaving the country before the inevitable happened. It’s my understanding that most folks who could leave already did.

I almost feel bad for the people but they keep “voting” for more communism.

Bonus article: Why the country is heading towards a dictatorship

Venezuela has more oil than Saudi Arabia and more poverty than Colombia. Once one of Latin America’s richest countries, it’s now plagued with shortages of everything from toilet paper to antibiotics and food.

In 2017, one aid agency said more than 11 percent of children under age 5 were suffering from moderate to severe malnutrition, yet Maduro has rejected humanitarian aid.
View Quote
Early this year, Venezuela introduced the world’s first state-issued cryptocurrency, the Petro. The U.S. called it a scam and promptly forbade Americans from purchasing it.

I actually should find some and hold it for chuckles.

Some Maduro critics instead hope for a military coup — a wave of officer arrests in early 2018 could signal growing dissension — while others find military rule unacceptable. Still others have suggested that the U.S., Europe and Asia could ban the country’s oil imports and hasten Maduro’s demise. But that would worsen the humanitarian crisis.

Couldn't care less. They re-elected the same Socialist scumbags that created the problems to begin with. Even the right wing couldn't unite behind one person to get rid of them. Any one of them would have been an improvement but no, they insisted on screwing themselves. The whole country can suffer till hell freezes over and thaws out.

They should just take the water from the people that have the water and give it to the people without the water. It's so simple really.

They can’t figure out how to move and store the water. Something the romans figured out 1000s of years ago.  They can’t figure out how to grow food or agriculture so they starve. They can’t figure out how to make money off their oil. All thanks to communism.

Chavez took over everything. Food, water, oil, education, housing, healthcare, land etc. then put the smart people of government in charge. It’s really fascinating to read about. A prosperous country turned into starving crisis in just 15 years. That’s all it took. 15 years of communism to destroy a nation.

Bet the hardline loyalists and the party inner circle still live like kings.

That is the tricky part about communism, keeping the rabble hungry enough to willingly do your bidding but not so hungry that they hang you from a lamppost.
