Vandals decapitate Confederate soldier statue at Camp Chase cemetery

A federal agency plans to repair a bronze statue of a soldier that was toppled over and decapitated early Tuesday by vandals at Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery on the Hilltop.

When the statue was knocked over, its head was decapitated, likely from striking a column in the fall to the ground, said Columbus Police Lt. Clifton Dean. The vandals took the head of the soldier but left the hat, he said.

The vandalism occurred sometime between midnight and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at the cemetery, where more than 2,000 Civil War soldiers are buried, most of them Confederate soldiers buried there after they died while imprisoned. Officers noticed the broken monument around 7:20 a.m. when doing a check of the cemetery.

I know the neighborhood from 30 years ago. It was bad then and has only got worse. Not surprising at all. There's plenty of residents there that don't need a reason to destroy property.

We have another Confederate Cemetery here in Ohio, up on Lake Erie near Marblehead. It's on an island and protected by a gate to the gated community there, so hopefully it won't face this issue.

I have a great, great, great uncle, A.C. Sykes who is buried at Camp Chase. He was a confederate soldier from Mississippi who died there from typhoid fever. If there is anywhere where a confederate monument is appropriate, it is in a cemetery where they are buried. I have been on the fence about joining the SCV for the last several years. After this, I am joining today.

Edit: Depends on whose rules you're following, one rule set does based on the word immediately following, other rule set does based on the noun referenced.

Edit2: I can't find any reference to my noun based rule set so I guess that's wrong. It is entirely based on whether the following word starts with a vowel SOUND. So does the word Army start with a vowel sound? "R - Me" Sounds like a consonant sound to me?

Edit3: I'm learning I have a poor grasp of what are vowel sounds. I think maybe an would be right because "ar:mi" has the vowel sound at the beginning? At least I know whether an airplane on a treadmill will take off :D
