Someone posted a link to a site that had what the markings on the uppers meant. I am trying to figure out what type of upper a friend of mine has. He says that it is a colt but I can not tell. It doesn't have any markings on it that I recognize. It has a little marking that looks like an A. Does anyone have any ideas?

Ok, I think that it may stand for Alcoa forge. But can anyone tell me what this means? It is a preban upper. Has the bayonet lug on it and the lower is a bushmaster. Could this complete gun be a preban? Where can I go to check the serial number....wait let me run and get the serial number off of it. Here it is --> L163845 CAL. 223-5.56MM MOD. XM15-E2S Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From http://www.geocities.com/Pipeline/2494/serial.html "Bushmaster** (800)998-SWAT or (800)883-6229 Below L051000 - Assembled Pre-Ban Rifles and some pre-94 lowers. L051001-L063000 - Mixed Pre-Ban Assembled Rifles and Pre-Sept 94 Lowers (Call to verify) L063001 and Up - Post-Ban" Sounds like a postban to me. That makes it an illegal gun configuration. Problem #1. As to the markings, for colt, use http://www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/uppers/ If you cannot fins the CM (most common) CH, or CAF, it aint a Colt. If it is a splintered "A", it's typically an Olympic Arms.
