It gets leaked.
That is what started the furor over Napster. Someone was leaking Metallica's new song "I disapear", before it was even finished, and they got pretty pissed off. |

 They were leaking unfinished versions of the song "I Dissapear" that Metallica was working on in 2000 for the Mission Impossible soundtrack. St. Anger wasn't started until late 2002/early 2003. |

The record companies send me CDs all the time (related to one of my businesses), and I get them as much as a month or two in advance of the general release.
A recording isn't just released as soon as it is finished. A record company will look at all the other music they have coming out, and will set release dates based on when they will have resources to promote and support it. If your group's album is the same genre as 10 other ones being released that month, they may schedule your release a month or two out. Or they may wait until your group is prepared to tour to support the album. All kinds of things affect those schedules. Which means that the album may be finished months in advance of its actual release date. -Troy |
