WASHINGTON — U.S. Special Forces killed Al Qaeda's (search) No. 2 terror mastermind in Iraq (search), Defense Department officials said.

FOX News has confirmed that Abu Azzam (search), who was believed to have been in charge of the financing of terrorist cells in the war-torn country, was killed during a raid in Baghdad early Monday morning Iraq time. Azzam is thought to be the top deputy to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (search), Iraq's most wanted terrorist.

Azzam is the latest in a series of top Zarqawi deputies that have been killed or captured by coalition forces in recent months. Zarqawi's Al Qaeda in Iraq (search) group has taken responsibility for some of the country's most horrific acts of terror including car bombings, kidnappings and beheadings of Iraqi civilians and westerners.

Earlier this month Zarqawi, a Sunni Muslim, pledged war on Iraqi Shiites in response to the U.S. and Iraqi military offensive on the town of Tal Afar near the Syrian border.

The U.S. military said it is continuing to make progress dismantling Zarqawi's operations. Officials credit much of the success to the increasing number of tips coming from Iraqi civilians. A top U.S. commander in northwestern region of the country said that 80 percent the terror network has been affected by coalition operations in his region.

Let's not belittle the work of our people in uniform.  O.K., so they didn't zap Al Z., but isn't Bin Laden more deserving of lead infusion?  Every death of a BG is in our favor.

It's hard to catch someone who moves every couple of hours and has many, many followers and places to hide.  It's easier said then done.

Finding one needle in a group of needles.  The only real rip-off is that he is shy a drumstick and probably walks with a cane (although that probably does not preclude him running, just amkes it hard).  They came with a 5.56 of him a little while back . . . shot up his truck and caught his driver.

ZARQAWI LIEUTENANT KILLED
27.9.2005. 11:25:00

American Special Forces have killed a key lieutenant to terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the top al-Qaeda operative in Iraq, said US officials.

However, there has been no official announcement of the death of the terrorist, who used the name Abu Azzam.

Azzam was believed to be responsible for financing and arranging the movement of foreign fighters into western Iraq from Syria and other countries.

The officials said that US-led forces got a tip about Azzam's whereabouts, raided a house near Baghdad "within the last day or so" and killed him after he fired on them.

They declined to provide additional details.

It's not clear whether Azzam's death, first reported by CBS News, will be a significant blow to the insurgency, the officials said.

They said that as a native Iraqi he probably had more intimate knowledge of the country, and particularly of its Sunni Muslim tribes and their rivalries, than Zarqawi, a Jordanian.

However, one of the officials cautioned that the deaths of other Zarqawi lieutenants "haven't put much of a dent" in the insurgency or the alliance between Iraqi Sunnis and foreign Islamic militants.

"I wouldn't say that guys like him are a dime a dozen in that part of the world," said the official. "But they're not impossible to replace, either."

However, two things about Azzam's death could prove to be significant.

That someone betrayed his whereabouts suggests that the United
States and its Iraqi and other allies are getting at least some valuable real-time intelligence about the insurgency.

Azzam may have had other intelligence information in his possession that could be useful in disrupting terrorist plans and hunting down other members of Zarqawi's group, or even its elusive leader.

That's the problem with a counter-insurgency like we are facing in Iraq.  Once you kill the Number 1 or 2 or 3 or whatever guy, another takes his place.
