Looking for a good resource on banking institutions that operated after the Second Bank of the U.S. closed but before the outbreak of the Civil War. Such institutions would have issued their own notes, and I am trying to compile data on them with regard to things such as longevity of firms and reserve ratios specifically, but any information on or list of such firms would help a great deal in getting my ass out of college. Thanks.

I read A Nation of Counterfeiters: Capitalists, Con Men, and the Making of the United States last year and I think it might contain some of the info you are looking for. I'll have a look around for my copy.

Best bet would probably be to look at the National Archives for old Treasury Department data....

interesting question. i have a couple colleagues... one is researching tax codes in 16th century europe, and the other is looking at 19th century colonialism in asia, from a revenue standpoint. ultimately it's kinda sketchy. i haven't seen anything archival that seemed real newer than the early 20th century.
