From the description, it would be better if they were air-dropped on the enemy rather than given to our troops as food. [rolleyes]

Speaking from the point of view of a groundpounder I can tell you that nothing kills morale more than bad food and lac of mail. The better the food, the happier we are. I say more power to the cooks......

A friend used to joke that he would have never left the army if he could have had powdered beer to put in his canteen. The sandwiches sound like they stay moist where they need to and dry where they need to for same reasons left-over pizza does.z

Damn, I thought this was gonna be like Chinese Fighting Muffins. While this is an interesting concept, I can't imagine they are too good. Best of luck to ya boys and girls.

If they follow some current MRE trends, they'll even be impervious to damage caused by the human digestive tract.... [rolleyes]

humectants? Sounds like some kind of biological weapon. Glad the soldiers found them "acceptable." Then again, the guys in Viet Nam found the early M16s "acceptable" when asked. I believe they were ordered not to say anything about them. Or were they threatened with never being promoted?

Aimless said Some Seabees (?) helped a bunch of us do some repairs and construction at a 4-H camp once. Those guys could cook! If I had thought for a minute food was like that in the service I woulda joined up. Dad told me that when he was in the service (SeaBee,VN '69-70) they eventually were limited to 2 guests per day thru the chow line because of all the moochers from other services (esp Marines).

Jay Leno noted that the sandwiches are designed to remain "edible" for 3 years... after which they are removed from the military and placed in bus station vending machines. [:D]

They spent millions of dollars finding a sandwich that won't transfer the water to the bread and make it soggy? Why not just package the bread and meat in separate foil, and package the two foils in the same pouch? Any meathead can put the two together.

By the time they published and distributed the field manual the cost would have gone up another few million dollars. Then there would have been the special training classes for NCO's and officers. Special unit training and stocking of "PARTS" for defective units. As you can see the only cost effective measure was for it to come preassembled. I can just see NCO's with little rulers measuring the height of sandwiches and making sure the cheese is on top of the ham for inspections.

I don't know about you guys, but I think the MRE's I have eaten were pretty good.
