Troy pointed out in Politico that nationally, Jews make up only about 2 percent of the American population but are heavily represented in big cities and have disproportionately high voter turnout rates. He added that while Democrats do get the lion’s share of the Jewish vote, some Jewish groups such as the Orthodox Jews have shifted to the Republicans, as seen in the 2004 elections, when 70 percent of Orthodox Jews supported George W. (Even though "70 percent...supported GWB" is mentioned, that "70%" only refers to Orthodox Jews....a very distinct minority in the US) A small percentage of 2% is not noteworthy of any fucking thing. |

Perhaps this cycle there may be a 10% swing in the Jewish vote to the GOP but it will be temporary at best. IMHO American Jews are die-hard hold-overs in the same vein of the once Solid-South. It seems a ethnic tradition with American Jewry to vote Democratic. Perhaps one day they will see the light (it took the South long enough) but I won't hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

There is a book (sorry I forget the title) that theorizes that much if not all of Hitlers resentment towards Jews centered around the fact that almost all of the Jews in Europe were Marxist. While it is no secret that Hitler did not like Marxism/Communism, what is less known is that the Marxists in Germany played a significant role in Germany loosing WW1 when Hitler was an officer in the military. Something that Hitler would have been well aware of and likely harbored serious resentment about, let alone concern that the same would happen to his military aspirations. It also goes much deeper in this country. In the early 20th century there was a great deal of prejudice directed at Jews in great part from the wealthy Republican establishment. Jews who did have the means were denied entry to certain educational institutions and social clubs. Thus the Jews said fine, we'll back the other guys and make our own, and they did. It is tough to explain to an older wealthy Jew that the current Republican party is one of inclusion not exclusion. It is opposite of their experience. Things got further complicated in the 80s with the Republican shift towards the fundy Christians. This was an over the top one for Jews as now they added insult to injury. The key problem being that Jews don't need or want the grace of Jesus as a savior and don't want anyone telling them they do. Jews don't prosthelitize and don't want the government run by people who do. They see the secular left as the safe solution. They will pay a little more taxes ( tribute) and be left alone to be Jews. This is how it has been for 2 millenia of the diaspora and they see little difference here. |
