$5B CAMO SNAFU

Army ditches failed combat uniform that put a target on grunts’ backs for 8 years

Over the
next year, America’s largest fighting force is swapping its camouflage
pattern. The move is a quiet admission that the last uniform — a
pixelated design that debuted in 2004 at a cost of $5 billion — was a
colossal mistake.
But until the new pattern is put in the field — a move that’s still a
year or more away — soldiers in Afghanistan have been given a temporary
fix: a greenish, blended replacement called MultiCam

From the article:

“Essentially, the Army designed a universal uniform that universally failed in every environment,” said an Army specialist who served two tours in Iraq, wearing UCP in Baghdad and the deserts outside Basra.  “The only time I have ever seen it work well was in a gravel pit.”

The specialist asked that his name be withheld because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the press.

I don't think anyone would call him a traitor over that.

He's just telling a truth that I heard from any soldier who ever
depended on the uniform to conceal them in peace or war.
I heard nothing but complaints about it, one of the major ones
being when I was going to get some stuff from the laundry,
and a PSG pulled up, literally, with a car load of ACU bottoms
and asked Mamma-san to re enforce the crotch areas, because
the uniform had a habit of blowing out the crotch.

But until the new pattern is put in the field — a move that’s still a year or more away — soldiers in Afghanistan have been given a temporary fix: a greenish, blended replacement called MultiCam. The changeover came only after several non-commissioned officers complained to late Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, and he took up the cause in 2009. Outside of Afghanistan, the rest of the Army is still stuck with the gray Universal Camouflage Pattern, or UCP. And some soldiers truly hate it.

Shamne that Murtha, of all people had to champion the cause.

All field uniforms for all services should be AOR1,AOR2  or Multicam depending on the environment.

Having different uniforms for the different services when we are broke is ridiculous.
Not to mention it complicates force identification.

Further, unless your rear-end is getting in a cockpit within the next 2 - 3 hours, you shouldn't be wearing a flight suit, this escpecially goes for people that "operate" satellites / drones, as I am unaware of where the cockpit is on these particular craft.

If you want the no shit truth about anything, go talk to a specialist. If Obama/politicians/the American people got the no shit truth about Afghanistan from specialists rather than politicized power hungry generals, we would be fighting this war in an entirely different manner, or not fighting it at all.

Just a suggestion as to what it might mean.  I'm not in an uproar about it.  Hell, now that
I read the article, it's not that the Army is switching to Multi Cam, just that multi cam is
the interim uni for deployed troops.

they are changing that.  Only active pilots and aircrews will be authorized to wear flight suits.  Its in the AF times.  I think last months.

Now, let's see how long it takes to re-equip everyone in the ARMY with new uniforms, boots, and every pack and pouch issued in ACU/UCP. I betting no less than another 8 years. Hell, I'll bet there are still units out there with the M16A2. Practically the whole Guard and Reserve are still waiting for the ASU to be issued.

ACUs are garbage. Im glad the new pants are button though, and we can sew on badges and name tapes again.

the ACU was and is a huge disgrace. however Im not too happy about having to get a whole new slew of gear....i still have a bunch of woodland/DCU crap that i cant turn in.
and i have a whole bunch of multicam crap still from afghanistan.

interested to see what pops up for a new pattern

I remember when the ACU was getting fielded, all kinds of different patterns on guys...ACU top and bottom, woodland IBA, tan shoulder DAPs,

yeah.....here we go again

Why not just stay with MC instead of using it as a temporary fix?

Mulitcam is the uniform that ALL services are to wear in AFGHANISTAN.  Because it was too easy to target certain branches due to uniform variations.  When the ragheads saw a group of soldiers in ACU's and 2 AF guys in ABU's, they would target the 2 AF guys thinking they were someone special (vice versa as well)  Who ever was dressed differently must be important so they instantly became targets.

With the Joint Force operations going on, there are many branches serving together and it was very idiotic to have all these different uniforms.

I like the multicam.  It blends better in Afghan environment and looks kewl too.

Why every branch picked a fucked up uniform version in the first place I will never know.  Have you seen that NAVY obomination???? The only one I truly like is the Marines Desert Digis and Im not a jarhead so I wouldnt be able wear them..

but EVERY branch is now issued MULTICAM before deploying to AFGHANISTAN.  Even the Puddle-pirates...

Not that tossing 5 billion down the toilet WASN'T expensive when an

The story of the birth of Coyote Brown:

“They [USMC] went to Home Depot, looked at paint swatches, and said, ‘We want that color,’ ” said Anabelle Dugas, a textile technologist at Natick who helped develop the pattern. That particular hue, she added, was part of a paint series then sold by Ralph Lauren.
