New Powered Eyes For Marine Snipers
March 31, 2006: U.S. Marine snipers are having much success with their new M-8541 sniper rifle scopes. These are military versions of the Schmidt & Bender 3x12 variable powered day scope. The new scope is more rugged than the old 10x scope that has been used for over twenty years. The M-8541 has superior optics, providing better visibility at low light conditions (dawn or dusk). The variable magnifications enables the sniper to use a wider view to spot a target, then go for the narrower, but more magnified, view to get the shot. The variable magnification also provides an easier- to- use view at closer ranges. The new scope weighs the same as the old one, despite all the new features. The M-8541 also uses regular AA batteries, making resupply easier. Marine snipers in Iraq began receiving the new scopes last fall. link Press release from S&B Schmidt & Bender has agreed with the United States Marine Corps to supply all Scout Rifle Day Scopes for use on the Corps' sniper weapons. A modified version of the Schmidt & Bender 3-12 x 50 Police Marksman LP II scope will become standard equipment on all .308 and .50 caliber USMC sniper rifles. The Schmidt & Bender 3-12 x 50 PMII LP is replacing a 10x sniper scope which has been in use for the last 25 years. The new scope features an illuminated Gen 2 mil-dot reticle, an improvement upon existing mil-dot styles, allowing for more precise rangefinding at greater distances and on a wider variety of target sizes. The Schmidt & Bender scope was selected from products submitted by 25 different companies as the only riflescope to meet or exceed all of the USMC’s rigorous specifications. The Schmidt & Bender scope will include an elevation dial made to USMC specifications. Especially attractive to the Marine Corps is the fact that the 3-12 x 50 PMII LP can be used on both .308 and .50 caliber weapons, with changes only in windage and elevation dials. While the modified USMC version of the 3-12 x 50 PMII LP is not available to the public, a similar model, including the Gen 2 mil-dot reticle, will be offered in the near future. Many scopes can be retrofitted with the Gen 2, as well. We are pleased and honored to serve one of the most elite, storied military organizations in the world. |

Cool, anyhting that helps 'em do their job better is ok by me!
Of course there will now be a run on Schmidt and Benders by Arfcommers everywhere! |
How long before people start asking what the best ebay M-8541 clone is?
With today's combat ranging from 30m across the street to 1000m across the desert, switching to a variable is a very good thing.
I was wondering the same thing after seeing the picture. |
Me too. |

..... and 3..... 2..... 1...... So, has anyone bought one of the reproduction m-8541's from Hong Kong yet? I saw one on ebay and was looking for some feedback..... |
Unfortunately the kidney market is already satuated by cheap imports from India and China. And what's with Leupold or Unertl that they can't make something of this quality? |
+1 |

to the tune of about $2500 or more per scope |
Here is a M8541 on ebay.
cgi.ebay.com/Apple-iPod-5-GB-M8541-1st-Gen_W0QQitemZ5878386397QQcategoryZ67835QQcmdZViewItem "Apple of your eye" really fits this |
When it absolutely positively has to be killed -- money is no object. |
I surely dont mind the USMC getting the very best, but I am pretty sure a group buy wont save us any money |
+3 Only place I see long enough for a AA battery, would be down the center of the elevation turret, and I dont think thats enough space. That has to be a typo. |
Hrmmm. Dunno about eye relief on those... |
A year ago the Army was getting Short Dots at almost 50% off retail. This optic should be no different. |
Yup. It's really nice. I am sticking with my proven M3-LR 3.5-10x for awhile yet, though.
Looks like sixteen minutes and six seconds. |
When our military uses 1.5 million dollar missiles, and billion dollar airplanes, 2500 is cheap. |
On the left, horizontally inside the rearward knob (which has 11 different brightness settings you can turn it to) |
True dat, dats why I gets da greem beamz yo. |
The civi model as asked for by the board.........

I dunno how you are going to fit a AA into that... |
Updating the wishlist as we speak! |
Deleted (I didn't realize it was an eBay link until after I posted it. )
We don't hot-link to eBay. |
I have 3 of these too. US made. Best warranty going, $800 or less. I doubt this new scope shoots the rifle for you...... |
We don't? I'd never heard this policy before. |
Maybe it's just in relation to EE ads but I thought it was a general rule, like not hot-linking to DU. I could be mistaken and, if so, my apologies... |
Damn I'd love a S&B. Probably one of the best made scopes money can buy.
That said, it takes alot of money to run a S&B. I guess, you gotta pay to play, and the best costs alot. |
Not for sales, but there are plenty of links to eGay for info. Don't be so quick. |
I'd puit that optic on a Mosin Nagant before I'd put a Super Sniper on an M40. |
pffft!, all that money on a scope and no flashing digital numbers.
The ones in the movie are more tactical and they have a higher magnification |
and they make quite little beeping noises. |
Ha! We need to get them the one Bill Paxton used as "God" in "Navy SEALS". You know, the one that could see THROUGH rock! |
Our snipers are earning their money in this war… big time.
If they want a fucking $250,000 thermal, range finding, illuminated, heat seeking, wind compensating jock strap. I would say we maybe ought to buy it. S&B is pretty good glass. I don’t think that anyone with half a clue will argue that fact. |
Now the real question: Where to get some "lovingly" used Unertl scopes at DRMO?
Semper Fi |
Its akin to saying "$250,000 for a car?!" when your buying a Ferrari. S&B is about as good as it gets. Yes, $2500 for a scope. From the best scope maker on the market. |
I thought that it actually took 2 C cells in the tube right down the middle. You know, the one with glass on each end so that you can see them and make sure that they're not running out of juice! |
