What are your preferences on the USGI GoreTex parka cover or the USGI Poncho for rain gear? How does the Poncho work when you have a LBV on underneath? thanks for your input GS

I'd take the poncho, because it has more than one use - shelter, litter (with 2 poles), sleeping bag cover, etc - and you can also wear it over your rucksack and keep your gear somewhat dry. You will get wet from the knees down with a poncho, though, and even though there are snaps down the sides to adjust for ventilation, you'll get pretty hot underneath it. Still, you won't be as hot as you would wearing a Gore-Tex parka, and the poncho can be used in blazing heat, unlike the Gore-Tex.

Both... goretex goes on your body, poncho goes over you, strung up, to eat or sleep. As an aside, goretex w/poly is the finest cold wet combo.

you really should have both the poncho is cheap and stores easily the gortex is a clothing item that is worn all the time depending on the conditions. if it is summer and hot keep the poncho out leave the gortex at home and stay cool in the spring/fall and winter have both

OK, But how do you deal with accessing your LBV when wearing a poncho?

Wear the LBE/LBV under the poncho, and only snap 1 or 2 side snaps together so you can reach in and get mags. I've always found it a lot easier that way, at least. Wearing the LBE/LBV over the poncho is a sure-fire way to wear the coating off the poncho, making it useless for anything else.
