I have 2 ports on the front of my tower that have never worked from day 1. It wasn't an issue until I got the usb cabled printer, webcam,digital camera....
I was "issued" a flash drive from work yesterday and I guess it's time to get them working. I checked in device manager and according to it..they are working (gotta luv windoze). I went through the troubleshooting tool and uninstalled them and reinstalled them. "Device working" again but when I plug in the flash drive..nothing. "Unknown device" appears in the hardware list in device manager. I had the side off the tower a while ago and checked to make sure they were actually plugged in to the mb..which they are. Any idea's or do I put the steel toe boots to em?

check the bios to make sure usb 1 and 2 is enabled. (this is not the speed, this is the connectors on the board)
make sure you have service pack 2 installed for windows xp so when you plug any usb device do you hear a little sound from your speakers??? and the bottom right hand corner does it try to install the device or just nothing?? im betting its not enabled in the bios. or they are just bad. some boards have a second connection on the board. ( thats why you enable usb2nd connection in the bios) |

checked in bios..nothing listed in regards to usb ports. Checked cmos and perphials..nothing.
got it installed.
Id I plug it into one..I get nothing. If I plug it into the other one I hear a "pop" from the speakers and the usb symbol appears by my clock. If I double click on it I get an unknown device error message.

its probably going to be easier to buy a usb hub. it will use one of the working usb ports in the back. but it will give you up to 5-8 more usb ports.
it should have a cable so you can mount it on top of the system or the side. is the system under anytype of warranty. if it is call them and let them know its not working. just a heads up. we have been getting alot of customers bring those usb storage drives to us. they are not able to get the ddata off the drives. . alot of people are loosing valuable data because they are using these thumb drives as their backups. I suggest having 2 backups. because ALOT of those usb drives are going bad. |

Are the cables that go from the usb port on the front panel to the usb header plug on the system board connected properly?
Edit: not backwards.. are they keyed for the board conenction? |

i believe that they were forced to key the plugins now. if its plugged in backwards it damages the system board. i believe once at the shop flames shot of of the front of the system when we plugged in a device. or so im told, i didn't see it but thats what they said |

One other thing to check.
Every time I put in a new mass storage device on any usb port, I have to manually change the drive letter before it is recognized, because the auto assignment of letters overlaps it with existing drives or devices. |

some case manufacturers dont even used keyed plugs - they have 8 independent terminals.... so it is VERY easy to screw it up.
Sometimes, they are plugged into the connector that is also used for the external soldered ports. Make sure your motherboard has specific USB ports... if you have different ones, try them. Also, doublecheck that BIOS.... mine can enable, 2, 4, or 6 ports. Forget about device manager or drivers. |

I would boot into safe mode, and delete all USB references in the device manager.
Also in the device manager, click on View, and then "Show hidden devices"... again take out anything that is USB related. Then reboot... see if anything works better. -d |

Thanks for the help folks. cruze5..the usb drive belongs to work and I have the info on it on cd as well...instead of copying my files on the laptop I use for training..the IT guys thought the storage drive would be more convenient.

Okay..so I finally took the side off the case. Both usb cables are plugged into a connector on the mb that has 5 pins. The usb cable has 4. 3 in 1 plug and 1 seperate.
I tried various configurations and nothing. I still get the "device unknown" when I plug it into one port and nothing when I plug it into the other. This is start'n to piss me off. |
