Leaders unveil updated utility uniform colors, pattern

by Tech. Sgt. David A. Jablonski
Air Force Print News
11/2/2004 - WASHINGTON -- Responding to Airmen’s feedback, Air Force leaders unveiled an alternative utility uniform color scheme and pattern Nov. 2 as part of the ongoing wear-test that was announced in August 2003.
Secretary of the Air Force Dr. James G. Roche, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. Jumper and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Gerald R. Murray are now wearing the latest test version of the utility uniform during visits to Airmen serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The most striking change in this version is the switch from a deep blue, gray and green color scheme to a more subdued mix of tan, blue and two shades of green. And the tiger-stripe pattern is now pixilated.

This test version includes design changes incorporated in September based on feedback from Airmen.

Blue Grey and white, that does match the colors of the sky pretty closely.... should provide good camo up there.

I like it better than the other submission.  I predict this WILL be the next utility uniform for the Air Force, not that we actually needed a new BDU.  We need to look at getting a new type of cover, though.  The "Marine-style" cover needs to stay within the Department of the Navy, it is distinctive to them; Kinda like NOT knowing how to properly roll up their sleeves.

Anyway, I believe it is a step in the right direction.

What says the gallery of peanuts?

this blue suit peanut sez:  It's a helluvalot better than the last pattern tested.  I really like the cover that I was issued--the one the Army uses.  I hate the ball caps issued at sq level.  (If I wanted to look like a Bubba the Truck Driver, I'd go get my CDL)

Better than the first version, I think I could wear this one.  Hate the 8 point hat.

Ditto.  This one's better than the last monstrosity.

Though, I've always thought THIS was the USAF uniform for deployments:

That's just for after their 6-hour shifts.

Seriously - I think the changes are a winner.  Kudos to GEN Jumper and others for listening to the feedback from the field.  The young guys will be happy with the "hi tech" pixels, and it no longer looks like a Hawaiian shirt pattern - it should also serve as camouflage quite well in most environments.

I tihnk they're trying to ignore the hatred for the 8 point hat. I have yet to talk to a single person that likes it.
