The holidays may be driving video game console sales, but apparently so is the military. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has strung together 1,760 PlayStation 3 gaming systems to create what it’s calling the fastest interactive computer system in the entire DoD, capable of executing 500 trillion floating point operations per second.

....

No red of ring of death apparently.

I think we'll see a lot of this in the future, that is, creative ways of using existing, cheap, off-the-shelf technology.

The massive R&D of graphics cards has lead to GPU's that are VERY fast at certain calculations. The ARFCOM folding@home team is proof

Lockheed Breaks WPA

A number of labs have been delving into harnessing the power of COTS technology to leverage the pricepoint of consumer technology while being able to make use of the parallel processing power of cellular processors.

any guesses as to why PS-3s?

My guess is they could not use computers, as that has all been contracted out in a huge rediculous civilian contract...

Because the Air Force can get money for anything but airplanes, simply by telling Congress how cool it is....

Because a Dell with the same computing power is over $1K each, while AFRL can get the same capability for a quarter of the price using a PS3.

Price point for the hardware they are getting.  $300 per node vs $3000 per node.

Its a pretty smart idea.  A supercomputer of the same capacity would be ALOT more $$$.  They did it with much less.

Also creates less heat, uses less power, etc..

I am going to say the above in red is FALSE!!

My PS3 is a heat producing pig of a machine... that thing will heat a room, and i am not kidding!!

VS a supercomputer of the same speed its less heat, but I know what you mean.  I have mine in a closet and its like a friggin oven when I open the door.

Game consoles pretty much have the same business model as GPSs and inkjet printers-they give away equipment and make their profit on accessories.

That would explain the feeling of deja vu.  Or maybe that's the Mexican plate I had for lunch....
