T
If you're in California and have a scanner, tune to 271.0 Mhz.
NORAD and FAA radio traffic indicates that NORAD intercepted Air France flight 68 over the US earlier this evening and has escorted it across the country.
No media coverage that I can find.
This is the same Paris to LA Air France flight that was grounded last week as an anti-terrorist precaution.
AF 68 on final to LAX right now, F-16s sticking close.

Flight landed safely.  But there's a disturbing article about a security guard for Air France being a convicted murderer

Why couldn't they do this to 4 different flights on 9/11?

Because we converted eight AD and ANG fighter wing that had in the past provided air defense to cargo units so they could fly aid overseas to help the starving children.

Hint: The ANG units involved still stood 15 minute strip alert in armed fighters as late as 92, by 01 they long since were flying cargo and fuel trucks.

Free Republic thread. They're almost like a de facto media service sometimes.

The Freeper guy was listening in to 2 F-16s that were taking a handoff from 2 other F-16s near Shafter, California.
The first two apparently made the original interception as soon as the flight crossed from Canada.
The controllers' call-sign "Bigfoot" is McChord AFB WA and it controlled the entire interception, with apparently a lot of input from the FAA.
It is possible that the Canadian Forces had been tracking it as well, but there is no news of a handoff from them, and I didn't hear it.

It's quite legal to eavesdrop on military radio, since there is no way to prevent it, but doing so with the intention of acquiring classified knowledge, or as part of an effort to reveal such knowledge, is a serious violation.
This is usually taken care of by various forms of cryptography, so you can't learn anything you aren't supposed to.
Transmitting on military frequencies will land you in front of a Federal Magistrate in no time, and the military is a lot better than, say, the Cable TV folks at pinpointing violators.

IIRC, CAP was 10 minutes late over NYC.....right?  There are still fighters on alert at Andrews, why launch out of Mass?

Probably is the closest Fighter Wing in the Area  also the Mass Fighters are in an ideal area to intercept flights from Europe.  The F-15's there are ideally suited for the task of interception, long ranged and FAST!!!

Cape Cod is close to NYC than Andrews, but as of 9/11/01 there were no ready fighters at Andrews.  Closest base with ready fighters was Langley, VA near Norfolk.

Bigfoot is the callsign of the NORAD controllers in that sector.  If Bigfoot was in fact (and I would assume it would be) GCI for the intercept, then yes, Canada would have been tracking it also, as NORAD is both US and Canadian.

Thank God we're reducing our military readiness to make more money available for foreign and domestic welfare!

What kind of state is the US in to defend itself now?  I mean, if Mexico decided to walk in right now, how ready would we be with so many AD & NG troops overseas?  Just curious...

Anybody hear about that body they found in the wheelwell of a jet at JFK, not sure where the flight was from, or about that women that tried to strangle the Air Marshall on a flight from pittsburgh to Minnealopolis, she was drunk as a skunk or on some type of medication.  Anyways why the hell would somebody get in a wheel well of a jet. if the guys was a terrorist I hope they would be smart enough to know your going to need oxygen with you and its going to be very cold. I don't think the underneath of a jet is pressuried.
