I have been in law enforcement since 1994 and went to my worst call ever Saturday 03/04/2006 at approximately 1625hrs.
I was pulling into my driveway at home and the dispatcher called my # and advised me of a house fire in town. I live about six miles out so I started that way and called my partner (home on call) and told him about the fire. He said he'd start that way too. You know how it is figured I'd get there set up some traffic control, wait for the Fire Department, and assist if I could. I wasn't running too hot, just hurrying some.
Well you never know what it is exactally you are going to: While in route the dispatcher came back over for me again..... I noticed her voice was sharp and anxious... "Be advised, step it up if you can, report of a small child still inside the house, I am starting EMS for you."
What do you do man? Code 3, all that a police interceptor will do, all my lights on, sirenes, running head on at 120mph toward on coming cars, it's going to be ok, they'll get him out..... I did not get there fast enough.
When I went 97 I saw my pastor trying to climb inside of a back window with a garden hose (he just happened by), another man running to help, black smoke and fire pouring out of the home. Momma sitting on the front lawn screaming "MY BABY MY BABY OH GOD HELP MY BABY PLEASE!" Then to make it even worse it was a fireman's home, a guy who is a friend of mine, this is his family, his kid.
From this moment on it was not even real to me. I was in a altered state of mind and felt like I was doing everything in slow motion. The fire was too hot to even put your arm into a window/door much less try to do an entry.
As the first truck got there a fireman, already in bunker gear, masked up and got into a window for about 2 seconds then dove out, the heat was so bad it melted the stickers off his helment.
We finally got a charged hose there and tried again, but it was just too hot. Then it hit, we can't do anything at all, We have done all we can do and we haven't even made a differnece. I was determined to get the kid out, but I couldn't.
I've been to a lot of wrecks, deaths, and such, but this is my first to be there as something like this is occouring, to feel the bitterness of helplessness, to be so grieved, and to know the family.
Today I want you guys to remember this young family in your prayers. The child was 2 1/2 years old his name is Shelby. Daddy's name is Adrian, and Momma's name is Crystal. There are two older kids also that lost their baby brother. When I got home that night I told my wife and daughter that I just wanted to go sit in the hot tub with them. We did for 2 hours and just had some family time together.
To all of "The Brothers of the Sheild." May God be with us and our families where ever we may be.

Just FYI the community has really got behind this young family, we had a benefit dinner Saturday night 3/11/06 tons of food was donated and over $10,000 dollars was raised for this family.
Most of us are all doing really well now, there are still a few firefighters and my Police Chief that are really taking it hard so remember them in your prayers a couple of these guys are almost in zombie mode.....
Be Safe and God Bless
