The Germans push for a EU Army (raising the spectre of the 4th Reich)...the French for NATO to be an arm of the UN
Security Council (what we dont want imo)
It is possible that under the US version NATO  would keep renegade Russia in check
and keep the EU from raising its own standing army and abandoning the US if attacked by Russia and China (which I personally dont believe they will do anyway-that is help us)
