Some people on this board may know my friend so I will call him Jose for this story. So I went out to dinner with Jose and his family tonight and had a good time. Later as we return to Jose's house we go out to his garage and start playing with his new lathe that he acquired this past week. Both noobs to metal lathing "Myself Especially" we started off just cutting on some steel rod and dicking around. Well after roughly threading this rod he goes crazy and begins on this whole "Shit Mang! If i can thread rod I can thread AR barrels who needs a die set mang!"
Before I realize that Jose is serious he is already chucking up a brand new 16" fluted UNTHREADED barrel into his lathe.... "Dont worry Mang" he says "Ill just profile it down a bit." Well moments later to my HORROR he tries to thread the end of the barrel.
First pass.... Not too bad looks pretty uniform and even... Maybe not so bad.
Second pass.... Same as first just a little deeper things are looking up.
Third pass.... going smooth about half way down when BZZRRTTTT auto feed stops and takes out a nice big clean spot right through the newly forming threads....
I couldnt belive it, I say to Jose "Whats wrong with you! 1/2x28 dies are only like $7!! Are you mad!!"
He only replies with "ehh mang ill just cut it down to 14.5 inches and addd a permenant brake mang."
A few moments later, close to vomiting I walk away from Jose wanting to beat him with the mangled barrel. "Where are you going mang" he says, with his thick south of the border accent. My only reply "home." And quite discusted I jump in my truck and leave. I dont know if ill ever talk to him again...
Moral of the story is Friends dont let friends F* up perfectly fine barrels.
