In the continuing saga of the CONROE build, I thought I saw someone post that Windoze XP operating system could be taken down from your old system and reloaded onto a new system and that Microshaft had some way of confirming that you really did own the original license and you had taken Windows off of your old system.

Can you transfer a legal (retail) copy of Windows from one computer to another?

Yes, you can.   But the old computer has to have its operating system deleted.

What are you retiring?

A 600mhz P4, 126mb Ram, CD/RW, no DVD or anything else fancy. It's good for surfing and typing reports but that's about it. It was the Cat's Ass, back about 1999.

If you are talking about building from the Windows XP CD.. yes.. and microsoft probably won't have you executed if you take your time transferring your old crap from your old system...

Problem is.. I think they will only auto-update if your build is at least SP1... so you might want to do a slipstream of sp2 on your old non-sp1 cd before you start.

Just make sure your old system is off line when you setup auto updates.

How do I go about doing this?

this is new to me, I thought the conventional wisdom was that you had to install the operating system from scratch, but that other types o f data could be transferred.

i don't see why this would be difficult.

get the xp cd and product key u used before.   install it on the newer computer.   when you attempt to activate(you will most likely have to call microsoft to activate) it tell them your replacing a computer and you have ditched the old one(i would assume you will do this)  and they will give you a new activation code.

im me if your unclear

Translation:

Stick the XP CD (or DVD) in the new computer and hit install.
